News Summary

Florence, South Carolina, is set for significant economic revitalization with plans for new businesses, a $180 million investment, and 600-700 jobs from a new distribution facility. The downtown area will see exciting developments, including restaurants, bars, and an event center. The anticipated arrival of Cheney Brothers’ distribution center promises further job opportunities and growth in Florence County, making the region a vibrant hub of activity.

Florence, S.C. Gears Up for Exciting Economic Revitalization

Florence, South Carolina, is buzzing with excitement as the city unveils plans for a major economic revitalization over the next five years. A sizable investment is in the works, with new businesses set to pop up in previously abandoned downtown buildings, breathing new life into the area that’s been in need of some fresh energy.

New Businesses to Brighten Up Downtown

Residents can look forward to an array of exciting new restaurants, vibrant bars, and a bustling event center among other attractions. Local authorities are on a mission to enhance what Florence’s downtown has to offer—beyond just delicious food and lively entertainment. Not long ago, a trendy jiu-jitsu studio opened its doors in downtown Florence, and it has already contributed to a boost in foot traffic, making the area feel more alive and inviting.

The new businesses will primarily be located along West Evans Street and Dargan Street, strategically chosen to attract both locals and visitors alike. The anticipated revitalization is expected to spark a total reinvestment of an impressive $180 million from private donors over the coming five years. This influx of investment promises to create around 50 new jobs by 2025, making Florence a bustling hub of activity for job seekers.

A Huge Win for Florence County

On top of the revitalization of downtown Florence, the area is also welcoming a significant construction project—a $66 million distribution facility for Cheney Brothers Inc. This facility, which is set to occupy 386,047 square feet and include 45 loading docks, will be the largest culinary kitchen developed by the company to date. Located on nearly 50 acres within the Pee Dee Commerce City East Industrial Park, the facility will stand proudly across Interstate 95 from the popular Buc-ee’s.

This marks Cheney Brothers’ first facility in South Carolina, and it is anticipated to significantly expand their reach across the region. The new distribution center will boast a variety of storage areas, including 100,963 square feet for dry storage, 90,095 square feet for a freezer, along with separate coolers for dairy, meat, flour, and produce. Additionally, there will be 30,424 square feet of office space, a test kitchen, and a full-service site dedicated to packing and shipping.

Job Opportunities on the Horizon

Upon completion, Cheney Brothers is expected to hire between 600 to 700 employees, adding to an impressive total of 3,000 new jobs anticipated in Florence County as a result of various company investments this year alone. The growing job market reflects the positive sentiments among local officials and the praise from governors regarding the skill and dedication of the area’s workforce.

More Fantastic Additions to Look Forward To

The arrival of new businesses in downtown Florence is set to include delightful spots such as an ice cream shop called Smiling Scoops, a trendy brunch destination named The First of the Month Eatery and Bar, an independent bookstore dubbed Jack’s Books, and a valuable shipping service known as Shipping with E’s. These enterprises aim to provide a diverse range of offerings, catering to the community’s craving for ice cream, delicious brunch dishes, inspiring reads, and essential business services.

With all these exciting developments on the horizon, it is clear that Florence, S.C. is primed for a future filled with growth, increased employment opportunities, and an invigorated downtown scene that will have residents and visitors alike flocking to experience everything this charming city has to offer.
