Florence Co. Residents Grappling with Reoccurring Flooding

Storm Impact Causes Flooding in Florence County

With the start of the hurricane season, several communities in the Pee Dee region are being affected by heavy rainfall. Notably, Minus Lane in Effingham, one of the seven communities in Florence County, has been washed out on county-maintained roads.

Many residents on Minus lane have expressed frustration about ongoing issues with flooding, expressing concerns about it interfering with their daily lives. One resident, Niki Williams, shared her and her family’s experience of not being able to commute to work due to the heavy flooding.

Menacing Flood, Affecting Lives

“I was stuck, my daughter who is twenty years old was not able to work at the nursing home where she works, she could not get out. She has a lower-lining car. I’m not understanding how we cannot get assistance with having this maintained and having this road corrected to where this is not an ongoing issue,” said Williams.

County Officials Address Road Repairs

In response to the situation, Florence County officials in a statement stated that they have deployed various crews to deal with the more than six wash-outs caused by the rainfall. County Administrator Kevin Yokim in the same report, expressed confidence that all reported incidents have been addressed and necessary repairs carried since Monday.

Residents Call for Appropriate Measures

Williams’s father-in-law, Detolian Williams, who also owns property along Minus Lane, begs to differ. According to him, the county should not let taxpayers like himself and his family suffer the effects of these frequent floods. Having plans to house a family member soon, he is concerned about their supposed ordeal through this menace.

“My niece plans on putting a house just a little, I say… about a couple of hundred feet down, and the road is messed up…it’s not an issue for anybody else. It’s just us, the family here,” Williams asserted.

A request for official commentary on the specific actions taken by repair crews went unanswered, with Yokim reiterating his belief that all known residences impacted by the flooding were addressed and repaired since Monday.

Conclusion

Despite the stated interventions, residents affected by the flooding are still left with many unanswered questions. As the weather patterns continue to be unpredictable, there remains an underlying uncertainty on whether repetitive occurrences of flooding will be an unfortunate fixture in their lives. Therefore, timely action and sustainable solutions remain essential.
