Florence’s former Griffin Motors dealership up for sale
In a significant development for the city of Florence, the historically emblematic Griffin Motors dealership building is now on the market. The building, which has been a cornerstone of downtown Florence since the early 1950s, was put up for sale by its previous owner, Adam’s Outdoor Advertising, four months ago, with PLC Real Estate handling the transaction.
The building was slated for renovation under Adam’s Outdoor Advertising, however, the plans could not be completed, as revealed by John Etheridge of PLC Real Estate. Adding more layers to the building’s historic status, it is listed in the National Historic Register, providing the buyer with the obligation to preserve its original architectural design and integrity for the sake of obtaining tax credit for the purchase.
Reflections on Griffin Motors
Marshall Griffin, a descendent of the original owners of the dealership, shared his nostalgia for the building, expressing, “Just fond memories of being a kid, say, 6 or 7 years old, growing up around a dealership.” He fondly recalled the days when the family raced cars from that dealership in various events such as the Darlington and the Southern 500 in Florida.
The Journey Ahead for Griffin Motors
The journey ahead for the Griffin Motors building holds a nation-wide scope as PLC Real Estate expressed interest in both national and local companies to open their businesses in the space. Etheridge voiced his hopes for the building’s future, stating, “I hope someone in Florence grabs it and restores it.” As a local, Etheridge emphasizes the importance of reviving the building and adding life to these aged structures in the downtown area. He nostalgically recalled his childhood years spent roaming the streets of the city and hopes for a resurgence of their vibrant past.
Several Florence residents have expressed similar sentiments for the preservation and transformation of the Griffin Motors dealership. They envision not just an addition to the local commerce, but also a tribute to the transportation history of Florence. The building indeed carries a lot of weight in the city’s history, having an inseparable link with Florence’s automobile and racing legacies. With this sale, it is hoped that the new owner will pay homage to this historical significance.
The Impact on Florence
The potential change in the ownership of the Griffin Motors building can lead to a positive ripple effect throughout Florence. The successful sale and subsequent restoration of the building would inject new life into the downtown area, potentially attracting more businesses and visitors. Not only is this beneficial from an economic perspective, but it also helps preserve the city’s rich history and identity, strengthening the community as a whole.
