Search for Permanent City Manager in Darlington Continues

Officials from the city of Darlington announced on Wednesday that the search for a new permanent city manager is still ongoing. The executive seat became vacant following the resignation of the previous city manager, John Payne, who left the city to take on new responsibilities in Charleston.

Interim City Manager Stepping In

Following Payne’s departure, long-serving employee Gloria Pridgen took over the reins as interim city manager. This transition came after Bill Taylor, the previous interim city manager, stepped down from his position last week.

Pridgen, known for her deep understanding of the city’s operations and her commitment to public service, began her career back in 1979 in the clerk and treasurer’s office. She later transferred to the Darlington Police Department before eventually returning to the clerk and treasurer’s office where she specialized in assisting the water and sewer department.

Pridgen’s vast experience in public service

Pridgen was appointed as clerk/treasurer in 1996 under the former mayor Ronald Ward, and she has been holding the position since then. Speaking about her experience working with Mayor Ward, Pridgen said, “Mayor Ronald Ward was very instrumental in my career. To this day, he has always supported me. Back in the 90s, we were both young, and we grew in our positions together. I will forever be thankful for his leadership“.

Her previous stint as interim city Manager took place before Payne’s selection in 2021. Her vast experience in the city’s operations and her proven dedication to the people of Darlington make her an ideal candidate for the interim position during this search.

Awaiting the Decision

City officials, while being continually focused on the search for a permanent city manager, have not provided any timeline or expectations as to when the new official will be selected. The final decision is eagerly anticipated, and until then, the city can rely on the experienced leadership of interim city manager Pridgen.

As the city of Darlington continues its search for a permanent city manager, it is evident that the city is committed to finding a leader who will continue to guide Darlington towards its defined goals and objectives. The city is taking its time to find the right fit, ensuring they find a city manager who will effectively serve the populace and commit to the betterment of the community.
