Remembering the Heroes: Six Years Since the Tragic Florence Incident
Florence, South Carolina, has seen its share of ups and downs, but one date that stands out in the memories of its residents is October 3, 2018. This date marks a solemn anniversary for the entire community, as it was the day when seven law enforcement officers were ambushed while trying to serve a search warrant in the Vintage Place neighborhood. The incident shook not just the city of Florence, but the entire Pee Dee and Grand Strand regions.
The Incident
That fateful afternoon began like any other, but it quickly turned into a scene out of a nightmare. At around 4 p.m., investigators from the Florence County Sheriff’s Office approached a home on Cotton Grove Road to locate Seth Hopkins, who was wanted for serious allegations related to sex crimes. However, as they attempted to execute the search warrant, they were met with immediate gunfire. The situation escalated dramatically when one officer was injured, prompting the Florence Police Department to respond for backup.
The ensuing standoff lasted nearly two hours, causing chaos and concern throughout the county. The streets were buzzing with activity as multiple law enforcement agencies rushed to the scene. Victims of this tragic event were taken to McLeod Hospital via emergency medical services and Medivac helicopters. The community held its breath as they awaited updates on the injured officers.
The Loss
Tragically, Florence Police Sergeant Terrence Carraway did not survive the attack, dying at the scene. His memorial service held just five days later was attended by countless officers and community members, a testament to his impact on the lives of those he served. Just three weeks following the ambush, it was confirmed that Investigator Farrah Turner had succumbed to her injuries. Her funeral on October 28, 2018, was another poignant moment for the community, filled with grief and the collective wish for healing.
In addition to Carraway and Turner, several others were also injured in the incident, including Florence Police Officers Brian Hart, Travis Scott, Scott Williamson, and Florence County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Arie Davis and Investigator Sarah Miller. Miraculously, each of these officers managed to gradually return to their duties, embodying the resilience that law enforcement personnel are known for.
Justice Served
The suspect in this tragic event, Frederick Hopkins, was brought to justice and received dual life sentences along with an additional 150 years for his actions. His sentencing underscored the community’s commitment to holding individuals accountable for their actions and ensuring the safety of its residents.
Heroes Day Celebration
To honor the fallen and the bravery displayed that day, the city has held an annual remembrance ceremony. This year, the event took place on Thursday morning outside the police department at the Florence City Center. Law enforcement officers from all over gathered, presenting flowers and paying tribute to the families of the slain officers. With emotions running high, this heartfelt gathering served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those in uniform.
Since 2019, the city declared October 3 as “Heroes Day,” a day devoted to honoring the officers who risk their lives for the safety of the community. In a touching gesture of support, the Farrah Turner Foundation provides lunch to nearly 300 law enforcement officers on this day to show gratitude and solidarity. It’s an emotionally charged occasion for many, especially for the family of Farrah Turner. Her mother, Katie Godwin, has said that Heroes Day allows her family to give back to the community as they continue to process their grief.
