Florence Celebrates a Major Boost for Domestic Violence Survivors
Florence, S.C. – The Pee Dee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Assault has exciting news that’s sure to make a difference in the lives of many. The organization has recently been awarded a generous $20,000 grant from The Mary Kay Ash Foundation, aimed specifically at supporting its vital domestic violence shelter program. This funding plays a crucial role in providing survivors with a safe haven and the resources they need during such challenging times.
A Legacy of Care
May 2024 marked a significant milestone for the Florence Emergency Safe Shelter (ESS) as it celebrated 35 years of unwavering service to women and children affected by domestic and sexual violence. The celebration also kicked off an inspiring campaign called “A Place to Lay Their Heads,” which successfully raised $161,878. This funding is earmarked for essential renovations and repairs to the ESS facility, ensuring that the shelter maintains its role as a cornerstone for safety in the community.
Expanded Services for Survivors
The Mary Kay Ash Foundation’s generous donation is set to bolster the Pee Dee Coalition’s mission by enhancing life skills services for shelter residents. According to Elaine Nero, the Emergency Shelter House Mother and Advocate, many women and children enter the shelter with specific goals. However, it’s not uncommon for them to struggle in achieving those objectives because they often lack critical skills. “When I see they are not meeting those goals, I realize they don’t have the skills to achieve them, so we work with them to build necessary skills,” she explains.
The shelter not only provides a secure place for victims to stay but also invests in their future by offering educational resources, job opportunities, financial guidance, trauma counseling, and support for children. The aim is not just to get through the immediate crisis, but to prepare residents for a healthier, more stable life once they leave the shelter.
Building a Stronger Community
Shonette Dargan-Richardson, the Emergency Shelter Program Director, highlights the current challenges the shelter faces. “Our shelter is currently providing services with reduced staff capacity,” she admits. The funds from the grant will not only facilitate the hiring of a Night Weekend Relief Worker but will also allow the program to expand its offerings to include more groups and counseling sessions with clients. This effort aims to improve the overall support network for those staying at the shelter.
The impact of the Mary Kay Ash Foundation’s grant is significant, as it will help maintain a safe haven for survivors and contribute to building a safer and more compassionate community.
