Community Mourns the Loss of Rayshaw L. Gaddy, a Pillar of Integrity in Florence
Florence, South Carolina, is in a state of reflection and remembrance as it bids farewell to a remarkable soul, Rayshaw L. Gaddy, who left this world at the age of 92 on September 23, 2024. Rayshaw, a beloved figure in the community, was known for his immense compassion, integrity, and unwavering dedication to uplifting those around him.
A Legacy of Service and Excellence
Born on May 24, 1932, as the youngest of three siblings, Rayshaw was raised by his late mother, Annie (Aunt Pree) Gaddy. His journey began at Wilson High School, where he graduated in 1950. Rayshaw made his mark in athletics and was proud to be inducted into the Wilson High School Athletic Hall of Fame. After graduation, he bravely served in the United States Army, participating in two tours during the Korean War and concluding his military service as a Sergeant First Class in the Cavalry and Tank Battalion.
In 1958, Rayshaw graduated from Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. His collegiate years were marked by both academic and athletic achievements, leading to his induction into the Benedict College Athletic Hall of Fame for Football in 2006. Rayshaw later pursued a Master’s degree in Public Health Administration from Indiana University, further expanding his knowledge and skills.
The Heart of a Teacher and Coach
Rayshaw’s professional journey was deeply rooted in education and athletics. His teaching career began at Battery Park High School in Nesmith, South Carolina, where he also achieved a conference championship as a basketball coach. His leadership extended to the South Carolina Area Trade School (SCATS), where he organized the Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while serving as the head basketball coach and athletic director. His coaching prowess was evident as he recognized and nurtured talent, even “borrowing” players from the junior varsity team, which led to a beautiful love story with Coach Ida Virginia Burroughs, whom he eventually married.
The couple welcomed their son, Andre’ Donnell Gaddy, into the world, creating a family founded on love and mutual respect.
A Voice for the Community
Throughout his life, Rayshaw was a dedicated community servant. He held several significant roles, including the Assistant Administrator at Faith Health Care Facilities and the Assistant Warden at Lee Correctional Institution. His commitment to public service was further exemplified when he sought the Democratic nomination for the State House of Representatives for Florence County.
His affiliations with various organizations included being a life member of the NAACP, Chairperson of the Freedom Fundraiser Committee, and a member of the American Legion and South Carolina Education Association. His passion for voter registration and youth development showcased his dedication to improving the lives of those around him.
A Loving Family and Lasting Memories
Rayshaw was married for 65 wonderful years to his devoted wife, Ida V. Gaddy. Together, they created a legacy of love, integrity, and commitment to community service. Along with his son Andre, Rayshaw cherished his brother-in-law, Clayton Burroughs, and his special godchildren, including Tim Hawkins, Carla Hawkins, and Marylin Ross Frederick. He is also survived by his two nieces, Vivian Montgomery and Bertha Carter, and a nephew, Nicholas Carter.
As we remember Rayshaw, it’s essential to honor his legacy of selflessness, intentionality, and unwavering commitment to those around him. He made a profound impact on countless lives, and his memory will live on in the hearts of everyone who was lucky enough to know him.
Final Farewells
Family and friends wishing to pay their respects are invited to gather daily from 11 AM to 7 PM at 1707 North Irby Street in Florence. A celebration of Rayshaw’s life will take place at Smith’s Funeral Home on September 30, 2024, with viewing hours set for 1:00 – 5:00 PM and a visitation later that evening from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. A service will be held at Trinity Baptist Church on October 1, beginning at 12 PM, followed by interment at Florence National Cemetery.
