Effingham Community Honors Alfred Rush with Restored Historical Marker

Effingham, South Carolina, Celebrates Legacy of Alfred Rush

On a sunny Wednesday morning, the community of Effingham gathered to pay tribute to a significant figure in their history, Alfred Rush. A historical marker, dedicated to honoring his life and legacy, has been restored after being damaged not once but twice over the last 16 years. Located at the intersection of John Paul Jones and Cummings Road, this marker now stands proudly again, a testament to the strength and resilience of the local community.

Restoration and Rededication

The rededication ceremony was a heartfelt event filled with emotion and gratitude. As descendants of Alfred Rush came together to commemorate their ancestor, the mood was both somber and celebratory. Attendees shared stories, shedding light on the struggles and achievements of Rush during his life.

Among the descendants present was Alice Rush, the great-great-great-great granddaughter of Alfred Rush. With a heavy heart, she recounted her feelings upon discovering the marker had been damaged. “It hurt me when I saw it was down,” she said, reflecting on the pain of seeing the tribute to her ancestor disrespected. “They broke it down two times,” she continued, wondering aloud why anyone would want to destroy such a significant reminder of their history. Yet, her pride was unmistakable as she declared, “Let them know our legacy. I am proud of our legacy.”

Who Was Alfred Rush?

Alfred Rush was more than just a name; he was a remarkable man and a trailblazer in African American history. As a state representative for Darlington County, he served during the Reconstruction era, a time marked by both hope and peril. Tragically, Rush met an untimely end in 1876 when he was assassinated just a half-mile from his home after a picnic with his wife. The historical marker encapsulates this pivotal moment, marking his contributions to the community and the nation.

A Testimony to History

Raleigh Tremaine Rush, another descendant, spoke passionately at the ceremony. His words painted a stark picture of the violent realities that Rush faced. He recounted how Alfred and his wife were ambushed by gunmen, referring to them as “Klansman” and “terrorists of that day.” With unwavering conviction, he stated, “His blood was spilled right over here,” illustrating the gravity of the moment and the significant sacrifice made by his ancestor.

A Community Effort

The restoration of the marker was not a solo effort; local leaders played a vital role in ensuring the historical tribute was reinstated. Florence County Councilman Jerry Yarborough emphasized the importance of preserving the history of the community, stating, “This is a part of our history. It’s important that we maintain this family’s honor by the dedication.” It’s this commitment to recognizing and celebrating the past that binds the community together.

Education and Legacy

During the ceremony, Florence County Rep. Terry Alexander highlighted Rush’s passion for education, expressing how he wanted every individual in his community to have access to a quality education. This commitment culminated in naming the Alfred Rush Academy in his honor, a beacon of hope for future generations.

A Resolution of Honor

In 2014, the South Carolina General Assembly paid homage to Rush, recognizing him as a pioneer in establishing free public education. His legacy continues to resonate, as the assembly’s resolution reflects upon his invaluable contributions to the state and the nation as a whole. It notes, “Alfred Rush became a farmer, a blacksmith, and a gin and mill operator,” demonstrating the breadth of his skill and determination.

A Future Defined by the Past

The renewed marker not only serves as a reminder of Alfred Rush’s legacy but as a call to action for the community. Together, they honor their past while striving for a more inclusive and educated future, ensuring that Alfred Rush’s dream of education for all continues to thrive for years to come.
