Hey there, Florence residents! We’ve got some exciting news that might just put a little extra spring in your step this winter. The e-commerce giant Amazon is setting up shop just outside of town, and it’s all happening at the shiny new Pee Dee Commerce City West.
That’s right! This $18 million project is all about sorting and delivering packages to make sure your online orders get to you faster and easier. Imagine the convenience! This facility will be located near Interstate 95, right next to the popular Buc-ee’s. With all the shopping we do, it’s a perfect match for the Florence community.
Florence County Council Chair William Schofield couldn’t be more thrilled about this development. He said, “With Amazon being a household name, it is an ideal fit for our area.” And who wouldn’t agree? We’re talking about more jobs, more delivery services, and opportunities that will really amp up the local economy.
So, why did Amazon choose Florence for this exciting new facility? According to Gregg Robinson, the Economic Development Chief Executive Officer, it’s all about location. Having easy access to Interstate 95 and Interstate 20 makes it an ideal spot for a logistics center like this. And the good news? They’re moving into an already built 117,000 square foot facility, meaning less construction time before they’re up and running.
This facility isn’t just a place to stash your packages, it’s one of those last-mile systems that make sure your favorite items are delivered right to your doorstep. Employees will be sorting those boxes before Amazon delivery partners whisk them off to your home. How cool is that?
Amazon is joining a growing list of companies making big moves in eastern Florence County. Not too long ago, we heard about a whopping $3.2 billion electric vehicle battery plant coming to town. Talk about some serious investments in our future!
Amazon’s presence means jobs, but the exact number of positions is still under wraps. However, when it comes to pay, hourly employees across Amazon’s U.S. facilities are earning an average of over $22 per hour. Since 2010, the company has created over 6,500 full and part-time jobs in South Carolina, investing a staggering $7.2 billion. These efforts have generated an additional $7.4 billion in the local economy making quite the splash in the Palmetto State!
So, what’s next for this new Amazon facility? While construction is finishing up, a specific opening date hasn’t been announced just yet. But with the enthusiasm from local leaders and Amazon representatives, it’s clear the community is ready to embrace this new chapter.
