On a seemingly ordinary Wednesday morning, tragedy struck in Burlington, Kentucky, when a school bus carrying teenagers was involved in a serious crash. Officers received a call about the incident just before 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of Collier Lane and Hanover Boulevard. But what happened next would leave the community shaken and glued to their radios.
According to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, the school bus driver experienced a sudden cardiac arrest while navigating the road. In a heart-stopping moment, the bus—still moving—crossed the intersection and collided with trees in the backyard of a house located on Sherwood Court.
Fortunately, help was not far away. Deputies arrived within three minutes after the crash, quickly assessing the situation. Their prompt action revealed that the driver was in full cardiac arrest. Without hesitation, they began administering CPR, showcasing their critical training in emergency care. Shortly afterward, Burlington Fire and EMS arrived, taking over the treatment of the driver.
The driver is currently fighting for their life at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood, where their condition has been reported as critical. Meanwhile, the bus held a group of students on their way to school, specifically those attending Cooper High School. The accident has left many in the community concerned and searching for answers.
Three students who were on the bus required medical attention and were taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Florence. Thankfully, they were treated and released quickly. However, one student, Tyler Hicks, was transported to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, indicating that his injuries were a bit more serious. Tyler shared an unsettling account of the crash with his mother, describing the scene as “really bad” and revealing that a friend had been injured.
As for the uninjured students, their parents picked them up from Burlington Elementary School, a short distance from the chaotic scene. The suddenness of the accident and the driver’s condition has sparked conversations among families, with many expressing concern and sympathy for everyone affected.
Tyler remains under medical supervision and is expected to stay in the hospital for at least three days for monitoring. His condition, while under observation, continues to be a point of concern for his family and friends. As the driver fights for their life in the ICU, the community’s thoughts and prayers are undoubtedly with them.
