Rosy Remembrances of a Beloved Florentine Veteran
Florence, S.C. – The community is saying goodbye to a remarkable figure known for his unwavering service and dedication. Colonel Barringer Fox Wingard, Jr., a 77-year-old retired Colonel who held a cherished place in the heart of Florence, passed away on a peaceful Sunday, as announced by Waters-Powell Funeral Home.
A Life of Service and Dedication
Colonel Wingard wasn’t just a military man; he was a community treasure! After serving nearly 36 years in the Army and the South Carolina National Guard, he moved to Florence in 2000 as he approached retirement. With over 20 years in active duty, his military assignments took him far and wide, including a significant role in recruiting, organizing, training, and equipping the Afghan National Police during his time in Afghanistan.
You might be scratching your head, wondering about his academic achievements. Well, Colonel Wingard’s impressive educational background includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Georgia Southern College and a Master of Science in Administration from Central Michigan University. He even graduated from the U.S. Army War College, focusing on Strategic Studies! Talk about a brainiac!
Champion for Veterans
His love for colleagues in the armed forces shone as he played a crucial role in shaping the annual Veterans Day program. Colonel Wingard was best known for his work with the Florence Veterans Park, a heartfelt tribute to local veterans. His dedication to this park was so profound that he was named the 2016 Veteran of the Year for the Pee Dee area, solidifying his status as a local hero!
Beyond his military accolades, which included multiple awards like the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star, he made his mark in community service too. He volunteered tirelessly for several organizations, serving on boards like the Friends of the Library and the Florence Rotary Club. He was also the Chairman of the Advisory Board for McLeod Men, helping to strengthen community ties.
What’s more? Wingard was a founding member of St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church and was admired for his extraordinary commitment to family and local community. He truly was a Southern gentleman who treated everyone with respect and kindness.
A Loving Family Man
Colonel Wingard leaves behind a beautiful family that includes his beloved wife, Carrington; his children Barringer “Bif” Fox Wingard, III, Krista Wingard Dickson, and Margaret “Meggie” Baker Daniel; and three adored grandchildren, Emma, Luke, and Sophie Daniel. Loved ones will remember him as a devoted husband and father who cherished his family.
Last Farewell
The community can pay their respects during a visitation held at Waters-Powell Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 19, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and other times at the Wingard home. A funeral service, officiated by the Reverend Eunice Dunlap of St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church, will take place at 10:00 a.m. on November 20, followed by a burial at the Florence National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are welcomed and can be sent to the Florence Veterans Park, the Florence Area Humane Society, and McLeod Men. Each of these organizations holds a special place in the hearts of many in our community.
