In the heart of Florence, South Carolina, a touching story of community support is unfolding, proving that when times get tough, the caring spirit of neighbors shines bright. Larry Jackson, a distinguished figure with nearly 40 years of experience in education, is now at the helm of the Pee Dee Education Center. His journey has taken him from the roles of teacher to principal, and even superintendent of Florence 1 Schools. Today, he’s focused on a vital mission: connecting local school districts with those in need.
Recently, Jackson reached out to a colleague in Asheville, North Carolina, and learned that the local schools are facing a serious crisis. “She indicated that they’re in dire need of water,” Jackson shared. This isn’t just a minor inconvenience. The Asheville schools are struggling without portable water for students to drink as they prepare to return to school on a limited basis on October 28.
The lack of access to safe drinking water is a pressing issue and one that Jackson felt compelled to address. He said, “When I asked what we could do to help here in the Pee Dee, she indicated if we can get her some bottled water, that would be great.” It was a simple request, but one that could make a significant difference in the lives of many students.
Understanding the gravity of the situation, Jackson immediately mobilized his network. He reached out to the 15 school districts he partners with, and also to various local churches, asking for donations of bottled water. “The only thing that separates us from North Carolina is the border,” he pointed out. “We have the same mission: to educate children.”
His commitment to education and community support is evident in his every word. Jackson believes in the power of collaboration, stating, “Anything that we can do to make it as convenient under the circumstances that they’re operating, the better. That’s our mission at the Pee Dee Education Center – to provide services to the community. In this case, to the Asheville community.”
In response to Jackson’s call, a local group even stepped up to lend their truck for the water delivery. This gesture highlights the unity within Florence as everyone comes together to help their neighbors in Asheville. It’s a beautiful reminder that no matter the distance, communities can come together in times of need.
If you’re inspired by this initiative and want to contribute, there’s a way to get involved! Jackson encourages anyone willing to donate bottled water to contact the Pee Dee Education Center. You can call (843)-661-1815 or drop off donations at 520 Francis Marion Road in Florence. Every little bit counts, and together, we can make a significant impact.
Water is a fundamental necessity, especially for children in school. Access to safe drinking water is vital for their health, focus, and overall learning experience. By stepping up to help Asheville’s schools, the community of Florence not only meets an urgent need but also strengthens the bonds of friendship and support between neighboring regions.
As we witness this heartwarming response to a challenging situation, it becomes clear that the true essence of a community lies in its willingness to lift each other up in times of crisis. In Florence, the message is loud and clear: “We’re in this together.” With each bottle of water donated, we are reminded of the importance of compassion and action in our everyday lives.
