Residents of Darlington, South Carolina, can look forward to some significant improvements to their community’s sewer system. The City is currently investing in a new state-of-the-art sewer pump station near the McLeod Behavioral Health Services facility on Highway 34. With a price tag of $850,000, this project is designed not just to modernize the existing infrastructure but also to encourage new residential development in the area.
The new sewer pump station is strategically located at the city limits sign, which is a crucial spot for promoting growth. It will replace an old line that currently runs over Black Creek, making way for a much-needed upgrade. In a move to enhance safety and reliability, the new system will include a force main sanitary sewer line that will be bored beneath Black Creek, just north of the bridge on the highway.
City officials are optimistic about the project’s potential impact on the community. According to Charles Shugart, the City of Darlington’s Director of Utilities, “The installation of this system will add a pump station to the Northeast side of the city near the Darlington County Club. It’ll allow for the Water & Sewer Department to better serve both McLeod Health and residents in the area.”
One of the project’s key objectives is to open up opportunities for new housing developments. The area has significant undeveloped land, and officials are hoping that by improving infrastructure, they can entice developers to build residential neighborhoods. This could mean more options for families looking to settle down in Darlington!
This ambitious project is partially funded by a grant from the S.C. Rural Infrastructure Authority, along with financial assistance from the City of Darlington. In April, Davis & Brown Engineering and Environmental Services from Florence was hired as the city engineers, and they wasted no time as they received the grant award. The construction has already begun, led by Frank Horne Construction, based in Fair Bluff, NC, which has mobilized and started work on the site.
The construction is expected to wrap up by this fall, with a goal to be fully operational no later than January 2025. Excitingly, this endeavor marks the second major project for the Water & Sewer Department in recent months. They recently put the finishing touches on extensive sewer upgrades along E. Broad St., with the repaving for that project nearly complete.
For those curious about the ongoing improvements in Darlington, more information can be found on the official city website or by contacting the City of Darlington’s office directly at 843-398-4000.
As these advancements unfold, residents can look forward to a stronger, more efficient sewer system that supports not only current needs but also future community growth. Exciting times are ahead for the people of Darlington!
