As the community gears up for the job fair, it is essential to note that construction on the expansive 1.5 million square foot battery plant is right on track. Gregg Robinson, the CEO of the Florence County Economic Development Partnership, expressed excitement about the progress. “Everything is moving in the right direction. And we’re very excited,” he stated. The plant is not just massive in area; certain sections even soar over 100 feet tall, making it one of the largest buildings in the Eastern Carolinas. And that’s just the beginning, as plans for a second building are already in the works!
In addition to the battery plant, Robinson mentioned the establishment of a new industrial park nearby. This 1,000-acre space, named the Florence Global Technology Park, will serve as a dynamic hub for innovation and technology, with AESC as its anchor tenant. The collaboration between the county and AESC shows a commitment to fostering economic growth in the area, which can ultimately benefit many residents.
Recognizing the importance of skilled labor, construction is also underway for a training center dedicated to the AESC battery plant. This facility, located along Highway 327, is being developed in partnership with the state, signaling strong support for workforce development in the region. Robinson highlighted the positive dialogue that has taken place between local officials, esteemed companies like BMW, and representatives from AESC.
Right now, AESC has set up temporary offices in a building on Dunbarton Drive and at the SiMT facility. As the company expands, they are actively subletting space to accommodate their growing team. Robinson shared that the need for engineers to be in one location is pushing AESC to occupy more of their current space, allowing for improved collaboration and productivity.
The construction of the new facilities is expected to wrap up by early 2026, with operations projected to begin in 2027. This timeline sets an exciting stage for both the local workforce and the electric vehicle industry, which is continuing its rapid expansion across the nation. The job fair on November 13 is just one step in ensuring that the community is prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities that the future holds.
