A fatal accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, involving a 50-year-old woman from Charlotte, North Carolina, on Interstate 95 near Florence. The multi-vehicle pileup led to the unfortunate demise of the woman and left several others injured.
The crash was reported around 3 p.m. about two miles north of Florence between mile-markers 169 and 170, where the busy interstate lanes had to be blocked for several hours. The pileup involved four vehicles: a 2002 Toyota Tundra, a 2021 Nissan Rogue, a 2017 Toyota Corolla and a 2010 Ford F-350 pickup, confirmed by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Michelle Lehnhardt Clelland, the deceased, was driving the 2021 Nissan Rouge. Emma Watson, the county coroner, identified her. No additional information about the deceased was provided.
The authorities are yet to release the specifics regarding the cause of the crash. The South Carolina Highway Patrol has taken up the task of investigating the circumstances leading to the pileup. They will be analyzing the crash scene clues and talking to any potential eyewitnesses to shed light on the incident.
In the wake of the accident, at least one person was reported to have sustained injuries and was rushed to the McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence by the Emergency Medical Services. According to the county coroner, a few more individuals also suffered “significant injuries” and were transported to the nearby hospitals for further medical attention. The health conditions of the injured victims remain undisclosed.
The crash left the northbound lanes of I-95 near Florence obstructed for several hours; the traffic came to a halt, creating a massive jam. The authorities worked diligently to clear the collision site and restore routine traffic movement. However, the pileup aftermath led to continued disruptions and slow-moving traffic, causing further inconvenience to commuters.
This tragic incident emphasizes the importance of necessary precautions when driving, particularly along the high-speed corridors like Interstate 95. Authorities urge drivers to always remain cautious, maintain appropriate speeds, and follow the traffic rules to diminish chances of such catastrophic incidents.
