Florence Benefits Family in Need with Heartwarming Chicken Bog Fundraiser

The rain clouds may be hanging around Florence, but a community coming together for a good cause is sure to brighten the day. On November 21, the wonderful folks at Cooks for Christ are rolling up their sleeves to host a special benefit that aims to help the Boggs family in their time of need.

Meet Jaime Boggs

Jaime Boggs, a resilient resident of Florence, found her life turned upside down over a decade ago when she was diagnosed with myotonic muscular dystrophy in 2012. This progressive genetic disorder results in muscle deterioration, making everyday tasks increasingly tough for Jaime. After years of working hard against the odds, Jaime has had to rely on her dedicated family for help with daily activities, finding it a challenge to navigate her own home using a walker or wheelchair.

Raising Funds for Home Renovations

To help make life easier for Jaime, Cooks for Christ is organizing a chicken bog benefit, aiming to raise funds for essential home renovations to improve accessibility and cover mounting medical expenses. “This fundraiser will really help with the medical bills and all the doctor’s appointments I have,” Jaime explained. “There’s a lot of doctor’s appointments.”

Jaime managed to work for nearly a decade post-diagnosis but eventually had to retire on disability due to her declining health. Now, with the support of her husband Michael and daughter Kailee, she navigates her home with the hope of making improvements to tackle everyday challenges, especially in the bathroom—a space that has proven to be particularly difficult for her.

A Community-Centric Event

Cooks for Christ is no stranger to lending a helping hand. For over 25 years, this volunteer organization has been organizing chicken bog benefits in the Pee Dee area for families dealing with health crises. They serve delicious meals, including chicken bog, green beans, slaw, and bread, all cooked and served from a local fire station. According to Beverly McKee, a longtime volunteer, “We want to make someone’s life a little easier. They’re worried about their health, families, and the last thing they need to be stressed about is finances.”

Each year, Cooks for Christ manages about seven individual benefits, and these events draw in crowds eager to support local families. In the past, they’ve served up to 9,000 meals at just $10 a plate—money that goes directly to those in need.

How to Help

The chicken bog benefit for Jaime will take place on November 21, and it’s an opportunity for everyone in the area to pitch in and make a difference. For those looking to place an order for takeout, there’s good news! Cooks for Christ offers delivery for orders of seven or more plates. Just fill out a delivery order form and fax or email it by November 18, and you’ll be set. Otherwise, meals will be ready for pick-up in person at the West Florence Fire Department, located at 3379 Pine Needles Road, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This heartwarming community event is about lifting up one of their own. Jaime expressed her gratitude, noting, “It’s overwhelming that so many people are part of it, and what they do to go through all of that for somebody.”

Join the Cause

So, mark your calendars, spread the word, and come support the Boggs family while enjoying some delicious chicken bog. Let’s show Jaime, Michael, and Kailee that Florence is a community that cares deeply for its own! If you have questions or need more information, feel free to reach out.
