Florence County is mourning the loss of a beloved member of the community, Dominique Tywan Howard, affectionately known as “Nique.” Born on September 25, 1982, Dominique passed away at the age of 42 on Friday, October 4, 2024, at Mcleod Regional Medical Center. His departure leaves a void that many in the community will feel immensely.
Dominique was a remarkable individual who grew up immersed in the world of music. From a young age, he demonstrated an innate talent; becoming a drummer at just four years old comes as no surprise to those who knew him. By the time he turned fifteen, he had taught himself to play the bass guitar. It was clear that music was not just a pastime for him; it was his calling.
A proud graduate of the Class of 2000 from South Florence High School, Dominique became a cornerstone of the school’s gospel choir, playing bass and lending his musical brilliance to various events. Following high school, he continued to showcase his love for music, playing at church services, festivals, and even personal milestones like baby showers and weddings. His talents could be heard with several musical groups, including TOS Live Band and Show and many more.
What set Dominique apart was not just his skill but also his passion for music theory. He was known for his ability to analyze the intricacies of melodies, exploring aspects that many musicians might overlook. His dedication was evident in his mantra to “play the song like the record,” a testament to his commitment to authenticity in his work.
Those who played alongside him speak of his prodigious ear and his willingness to embrace the whole spectrum of music, often learning parts for different instruments in addition to his bass. With a respectful and humble demeanor, Dominique’s approach to music was that of a scholar, ensuring he mastered every layer of his craft.
Beyond his musical genius, Dominique was remembered for his charismatic and humorous personality. His laughter filled hallways, and his jokes brought comfort to many during tough times. He had a unique ability to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds, **embracing everyone** he met with open arms. Friends often describe him as a source of light—a guiding presence you felt, even if you couldn’t see him.
Dominique leaves behind a loving family, including his daughter, Ni’Kadeyyn D’Monyai Howard, and his proud parents, Moses and Zona Ann Mitchell Howard. His brother, Leonard (Marquia) Howard, along with his niece Kirsten M. Howard and nephew Kali A. Howard, will also cherish the fond memories of him. Additionally, Dominique leaves behind nine aunts and uncles who adored him, as well as numerous friends and family who hold treasured memories of their time with him.
The void left by Dominique’s passing will be felt deeply in Florence County. Many have rallied together to support one another as they cope with the grief of losing such a talented and vibrant soul. To honor Dominique’s memory, family members have suggested that those who wish to pay their respects can send flowers or plant trees on his behalf.
If you or anyone you know is struggling with grief, it’s important to remember you’re not alone. There are ways to cope, including joining communities or programs that offer support. Consider seeking out resources that can help guide you through this difficult time.
As we remember the life of Dominique T. Howard, let us celebrate his legacy, his music, and the impact he had on all of us. His spirit will undoubtedly continue to resonate in the hearts of those who loved him.
