News Summary

Florence County, SC is facing significant winter weather disruptions leading to multiple traffic incidents and fatalities. With roads affected and emergency responses underway, residents are urged to remain cautious as investigations continue into the troubling statistics of road safety this season, with 12 fatalities reported in Florence County alone. Local authorities stress the importance of safety measures and community vigilance as adverse weather conditions persist.

Winter Weather Wreaks Havoc on Florence County Roads

Florence County, SC is bracing itself for a challenging winter as weather conditions have resulted in a flurry of traffic disruptions and accidents. With the winter chill settling in, residents are being urged to tread carefully on the roads. South Irby Street in the Effingham area is currently blocked off due to a significant crash. According to local emergency management, all lanes at South Irby Street and McLaughlin Road are shut down, adding to the frustration for drivers navigating the area.

A Record of Chaos on the Roads

Just yesterday, the situation took a turn for the worse as a six-car crash erupted in Pee Dee around 5 p.m. This incident not only caused extensive damage but also resulted in a car fire and injuries to two individuals. Fortunately, the quick response from the West Florence Fire Department led to the fire being put out promptly, and emergency personnel treated the injured on the scene. However, two individuals were transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation, which has left many in the community wondering about their current status.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is already on the case, investigating the six-car mess on Pisgah Road near West Lucas Street. As winter weather continues to challenge both drivers and emergency responders, it’s clear that caution is needed now more than ever.

A Tragic Day for Florence County

The chaos didn’t end there. Earlier that same day, a tragic incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. on the intersection of Walnut Street and East Palmetto Street. A driver lost their life in a horrific crash involving a 2014 Ford Fusion. The vehicle reportedly veered off the road and struck a tree, leaving the sole occupant critically injured. Sadly, despite being rushed to a hospital, the individual succumbed to their injuries.

The heart-wrenching tale didn’t stop with just one fatality. A midday incident on Vox Highway saw a collision involving a pickup truck and a cyclist. The 2022 Toyota Tacoma collided with 29-year-old Harley Howell’s bicycle. Tragically, Howell did not survive. Fortunately, neither the truck driver nor their passenger sustained any injuries during this devastating incident.

Ongoing Investigations and Safety Precautions

The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to look into all accidents, including whether safety measures, like helmet use for cyclists and seat belt use for vehicle occupants, were adhered to. These investigations are crucial as they aim to bring clarity and, hopefully, prevent future tragedies like these.

The winter season poses unique challenges. As of early September 2024, the grim statistics reveal that 597 individuals have lost their lives in traffic accidents across South Carolina. Within this statistic, Florence County alone has witnessed 12 fatalities, a staggering number that signals a need for greater awareness and safety on local roads.

Stay Safe This Winter

As the winter weather continues to blanket Florence County in colder temperatures and possibly hazardous driving conditions, residents are reminded to practice caution and vigilance. Whether it’s reducing speed, keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, or making sure to check on community updates regarding road conditions, every bit counts.

Please stay alert during these challenging times and ensure that both you and your loved ones are safe while traveling. Florence County is a tight-knit community, and by looking out for each other, we can all help to make our roads just a little bit safer this winter season.
