Florence Bids Farewell to Mayor Ervin as New Leadership Ushers in a Promising Future

Florence Celebrates Accomplishments as New Leadership Takes Charge

Florence, S.C. – The city of Florence is buzzing with excitement as outgoing Mayor Teresa Myers Ervin took center stage on Tuesday to share the highlights of her administration just hours before mayor-elect Lethonia Barnes was set to be sworn in. It was a heartfelt press conference, where Ervin reflected on her journey and the strides she believes the city has made during her time as the leader.

Taking the Helm with Pride

Ervin, who made history in 2020 as the first Black and female mayor of Florence, expressed her gratitude and pride in the accomplishments of her tenure. After years of serving on the Florence City Council, she stepped into the mayor’s office to bring a fresh perspective to local governance. “We’ve turned Florence into the economic hub of Florence County,” she proudly stated while discussing the successes her administration has seen.

Ervin highlighted one of the crown jewels of her accomplishments: the arrival of EV battery company AESC to Florence, which is expected to create numerous jobs and boost the local economy significantly. She expressed her dedication to economic policies that aim to benefit the community at large and make Florence a go-to destination for businesses.

The Legacy of Progress

During her remarks, Ervin noted several key projects she championed, including the Jean and Hugh K. Leatherman Behavioral Care Pavilion and a promising partnership with Francis Marion University to establish a medical school in the city. Both projects represent her commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility and educational opportunities for the residents of Florence.

Moreover, Ervin emphasized the importance of homeownership and acknowledged the city’s various programs designed to assist residents in becoming homeowners. “We want to empower our community and break down barriers that have held many back,” she added with conviction. This sentiment was not lost on her supporters who have seen the impact these initiatives have had on local families.

Looking Towards the Future

While Ervin celebrate her achievements, she expressed concern about the direction in which the city council may be heading. “I feel it’s important to keep representation for all parts of our city, especially the western, northern, and eastern sectors,” she noted, voicing her worries regarding the Community Development Block Grants Program and ensuring all voices are heard.

Nin Dunham, a resident from the western part of Florence, echoed Ervin’s concerns. “The voice is going to leave,” she remarked anxiously. “Who will step in with the same passion and heart that she had?” This reflects a broader sentiment among residents who hope the incoming administration will uphold the values that Ervin worked hard to instill in the city.

Thankful for the Journey

As she wrapped up her press conference, Ervin took a moment to thank those who supported her journey. “Thank you for electing me and making me a part of history for the city of Florence,” she said warmly. Her words resonated with many, serving as a reminder that progress is possible when individuals invest their hearts into community service.

Looking ahead, Ervin mentioned that she doesn’t have any immediate plans to run for public office again, leaving many to wonder what her next chapter will hold. While her time as mayor is coming to a close, her contributions will undoubtedly echo throughout Florence for years to come.

As Lethonia Barnes prepares to take the reins, both supporters and critics of Ervin’s leadership will be watching closely to see how the new administration will build upon the foundation that has been laid. Change is in the air, but Florence can take comfort in knowing that the city’s past achievements have set an ambitious stage for the future.

Keep your ears to the ground, Florence—exciting times are ahead!
