In the charming city of Florence, South Carolina, a local man, Jeffrey Leibowitz, found himself in a terrifying situation recently when he was bitten by the world’s most venomous snake, the inland taipan. This harrowing incident occurred in his home on September 6, and as the local community began to hear about it, many were left wondering just how this could happen, especially to someone who claims to be a lifelong snake enthusiast.
Leibowitz himself took to social media on Friday to confirm that he had indeed been bitten by the taipan, a snake known for its potent venom, which is so strong that just one bite can take down a full-grown adult. Former snake owner and expert, Al Coritz, expressed his shock upon seeing Leibowitz’s videos on Facebook, where he noted that the care and handling of these dangerous reptiles were “totally improper.”
Coritz was particularly alarmed by the plastic containers that Leibowitz used to house the snakes, indicating that they are not safe for long-term use as snakes can easily escape through any small openings. What’s alarming is that Leibowitz was seen handling the snakes without proper tools like snake hooks or tongs, which increases the chances of a bite significantly. “It’s only a matter of time before the snake strikes back,” expressed Coritz with concern.
Al Coritz has been an avid snake keeper since 1973, possessing a wealth of knowledge about various species, including 67 different types of venomous snakes. His passion for reptiles began in his teenage years when he started with nonvenomous types before venturing into owning the more dangerous varieties. Coritz shared, “This has been a lifelong passion for me. I’ve always been fascinated by how these animals have evolved to develop their unique survival strategies.”
His admiration for these creatures stems from a scientific background, leading him to deeply study their biology and venomous capabilities. “Each toxin serves a very specific purpose, primarily for predation,” he elaborated, displaying his enthusiasm for the subject. Yet, this enthusiasm comes with a serious responsibility, especially for those in possession of such dangerous animals.
One key aspect of owning venomous snakes that Coritz stressed is the necessity of having antivenom readily available. This protective measure is crucial, though it can come at a hefty price—often around $4,000 a vial. It’s essential because, as Coritz put it, “It’s like living 10 hours from the nearest firehouse. What’s going to be left when they finally arrive?”
Leibowitz is reportedly having his antivenom flown in from another state, which he needs urgently. Coritz described the antivenom as “polyvalent,” meaning it neutralizes the venom from multiple Australian snake species—all in one vial. This preparedness could be a lifesaver for anyone dealing with such dangerously venomous creatures.
The reptile community has rapidly reacted to this incident, with professionals urging people to prioritize safety when handling snakes. Maria Marinopoulos, the owner of the Ultimate Reptile Show, stated that their events have strict regulations, and they have no connection to how Leibowitz acquired his snake, which he received through a private deal on Facebook. “It’s important for vendors and owners alike to follow safe practices,” she emphasized.
As the dust settles on this alarming event, the collective hope is for Jeffrey Leibowitz’s swift recovery and for the snake community to come together to promote safe handling and education about these remarkable reptiles. Each step away from irresponsible practices can help ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future.
Florence residents are left reflecting on the nature of exotic pet ownership—a practice that, while exciting, comes with serious risks and responsibilities. As more stories emerge from this growing community, may awareness and safety become the prevailing themes.
