Officials have identified the man from Florence who tragically lost his life in a kayaking incident over the weekend in North Carolina. The man was 72-year-old Ross Fulcher, who was seen launching his kayak from a beach near the Cape Hatteras National Seashore early Saturday morning.
According to witnesses present, Fulcher’s kayak flipped as he attempted to ride away, at a distance almost 50 yards from the beach. Observing the mishap, bystanders swiftly swam out to help, pulling Fulcher from his overturned kayak and bringing him back to shore. Despite their best efforts to administer CPR, their attempts at revival proved futile.
In a heartfelt statement, the superintendent of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, David Hallac, expressed his sympathies. “We send our condolences to the kayaker’s family and friends,” he said.
The incident is currently under investigation by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. As it was a tragic event involving water sports, the accident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers associated with such recreational activities, particularly for older participants.
As the summer season continues and more people flock to enjoy water-based sports and activities, it serves as a pertinent reminder to ensure the utmost caution and safety. This includes wearing appropriate safety gear, staying vigilant about weather and water conditions, and maintaining an absolute commitment to safety protocols. The unfortunate event highlights the need for these precautionary measures to prevent such tragic incidents.
