Florence Man Sentenced to 18 Months for Scamming Elderly Drivers

Florence Man Sentenced for Targeting Elderly Drivers

Florence, S.C. – A man from Florence is set to face the consequences of his actions as he embarks on an 18-month journey in the South Carolina Department of Corrections. Cornelius Jones, aged 44, has pleaded guilty to a series of heartless crimes targeting elderly drivers, according to the South Carolina Department of Insurance (SCDOI).

Conned and Deceived: Jones’ Scheme

Between the years 2020 and 2022, Jones devised a cunning plan that preyed upon the vulnerable, specifically targeting elderly drivers in business parking lots. The SCDOI stated that Jones would sneakily either walk or drive into the back of victims’ vehicles as they were trying to leave their parking spots. Imagine that—just going about your day when suddenly an accident happens that you never saw coming!

Once the collision occurred, Jones reportedly pretended to be injured, hoping to score a payout he didn’t deserve. Not only did he aim to receive insurance payments, but he also attempted to extort cash directly from his unsuspecting victims. Given the sensitive nature of dealing with injuries and accidents, it’s almost unfathomable to think someone could exploit such situations.

Financial Fallout

In a staggering turn of events, this scheme led to Jones pocketing a total of $14,210 from insurance payments. However, it came at a cost to his victims, who suffered damages amounting to $1,773 to their vehicles. Now, as a result of his actions, Jones will be required to pay a total of $15,983.04 in compensation to those he wronged.

What’s Next for Jones?

After serving his 18-month sentence, Jones will have to navigate three and a half years of probation. It’s a hefty price to pay for engaging in such unscrupulous activities. The SCDOI’s director, Michael Wise, commented on the case, noting that it highlights the agency’s dedicated mission to hold accountable those who take advantage of consumers and the insurance industry. “This leads to higher premiums across the state,” he stated, making it clear that insurance fraud impacts us all.

Joint Investigation Efforts

The investigation into Jones’ activities was not a solo endeavor. It involved thorough collaboration between the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), the Florence Police Department, and the Florence County Sheriff’s Office. Their collective efforts were crucial in bringing this case to a close.

What Can You Do?

Consumer awareness is key, especially when it comes to protecting ourselves from unfortunate situations like this. If you suspect that you or someone you know might be a victim of insurance fraud, it’s essential to act promptly. The South Carolina Department of Insurance’s Fraud Division has made it easy to report such incidents by calling 1-800-95-FRAUD. Your vigilance could help put a stop to these deceitful practices!

In the face of crime, let’s stay informed and proactive. While Cornelius Jones may have thought he could get away with victimizing elderly drivers, justice has prevailed. Here’s hoping it will serve as a wake-up call to others contemplating similar acts of dishonesty!
