Florence, South Carolina, is buzzing with excitement as McLeod Regional Medical Center unveils its newly renovated cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU). After more than two years of extensive construction, the hospital held a special ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 26, marking a significant milestone in healthcare for the region. The upgraded unit not only enhances patient care but also keeps the unit located in its original, prime spot.
McLeod’s CVICU has a rich history, having opened its doors in 1986 to provide critical care for cardiovascular patients. Over the years, it has undergone various changes, most notably since the integration of Pee Dee Cardiology in 2012, which has expanded from just three cardiologists to a robust team of 45 providers. This includes radiologists, nurse practitioners, and doctors dedicated to heart and vascular care. Dr. Alan Blaker, the Executive Medical Director of the McLeod Heart and Vascular Institute, noted how the advancements in technology and increased staffing have transformed the caliber of care that can now be offered.
As the renovations kicked off in May 2024, the unit temporarily treated patients on the third floor of the critical care unit. But there’s great relief and excitement among staff members as they prepare to move back to their original space on October 8. Sandra Bazen, the Director of the CVICU, expressed enthusiasm about the transition, emphasizing the advantages of being close to the cardiovascular operating room, which will streamline patient transport and care processes.
The newly renovated unit boasts a modern, state-of-the-art facility equipped with the latest technology to aid care providers in delivering exceptional care. With 12 patient rooms, the unit’s redesign focuses on broadening the space for better interaction among visitors and healthcare staff. Amanda Butler, the Vice President of Heart and Vascular Services, highlighted the importance of maintaining an open design. The rooms are organized in a horseshoe shape, ensuring staff can keep a watchful eye on patients while providing necessary support.
A significant point of pride for the McLeod Regional Medical Center team is the ability to offer advanced cardiovascular care without patients needing to travel long distances or out of state. Many individuals from across the Pee Dee region rely on this specialized care, especially for complex procedures like open-heart surgery. Sandra Bazen noted, “To be able to offer this service is impressive. You don’t have to travel further for top-notch care.” The state-of-the-art renovations ensure that top-quality cardiovascular treatment is just around the corner for local patients.
As the completion and opening of the renovated cardiovascular intensive care unit draws near, anticipation continues to build within the community. The investment into modernized facilities signifies not just a commitment to healthcare excellence but also the strengthening of the legacy McLeod Regional Medical Center has built over the decades. From its humble beginnings in the 1980s to this grand reopening, the hospital’s dedication to caring for its patients remains unwavering.
With the promise of new technology and enhanced patient care capabilities, the future looks bright for the cardiovascular intensive care unit at McLeod. The community is eager to see how these upgrades will further improve health outcomes and provide essential support to those in need.
