Florence, S.C. — Florence 1 Schools has officially been recognized as a Purple Star District by the South Carolina Department of Education. This designation, awarded on Friday, emphasizes the district’s commitment to supporting military-connected families and students as they navigate transitions to new schools and communities.
The Purple Star District designation is a significant honor that indicates a school district’s dedication to addressing the unique needs of military families. Currently, only 13 out of over 60 school districts in South Carolina hold this designation, according to the South Carolina Department of Veterans Affairs.
The Assistant Superintendent of Florence 1 Schools, Greg Hall, expressed that this recognition highlights the district’s focus on creating a supportive and welcoming environment for military-connected students and their families. “This achievement reflects the hard work and dedication of our staff to make Florence 1 Schools a place where every student, especially those from military families, feels valued and supported,” he stated.
To celebrate this accomplishment, the US Air Force JROTC from Wilson High School will take part in a special ceremony. The Presentation of Colors will occur during a Veterans Day ceremony at the Florence Veterans Park. This event will mark the formal announcement of Florence 1 Schools as a Purple Star District.
To achieve the Purple Star status, Florence 1 Schools had to meet several criteria. This includes training by the Military Child Education Coalition and implementing programs designed to support the specific situations military families encounter. One initiative the district has established is a comprehensive resource page that provides essential information regarding new student registration, extracurricular activities, and links to community resources.
The formation of resources aimed at assisting military families underlines the district’s commitment to community involvement. The district aims to ensure that families transitioning into the area have access to vital information in a streamlined manner. Families can easily access the resource page created specifically to assist military students and their families in their new journeys.
By receiving the Purple Star designation, Florence 1 Schools demonstrates proactive efforts in fostering a supportive environment for military-connected students. This recognition not only reflects the district’s efforts but also ensures that families can find stability and support during what can often be a challenging transition.
The acknowledgment of Florence 1 Schools as a Purple Star District symbolizes a larger commitment to equity and support for all students, and particularly those whose lives are impacted by military service. As the community continues to celebrate this achievement, the focus remains on providing opportunities and a sense of belonging for every student.
