Road in Florence Named in Honor of Former Senator
Sumter Street, a well-known road in Florence, is now carrying an additional title in honor of former Senator Maggie Wallace Glover. This stretch of road, from the intersection of Alexander Street up to where it meets McQueen Street, will also be recognized as “Senator Maggie Glover Way.”
Community Honors a Trailblazer
Nearly a hundred people turned out for the naming ceremony. Taking place on West Sumter Street, an area of Florence where Glover has lived for much of her life, friends, family, and even former political colleagues braved the heat to show their love and support for Glover’s accomplishments.
Reflecting on a Lifetime of Service
Glover is often lauded as a tireless leader who worked to make life better for the people of Florence and Marion Counties. She served distinguished tenures in the South Carolina General Assembly, first as a member of the House of Representatives from 1989 to 1992, and then as a member of the Senate from 1993 to 2004.
Maggie Wallace Glover was born on August 29, 1948, in Florence, the daughter of Fulton and Ethel Greene Wallace. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fayetteville State University in 1970 and a Master of Education degree from Francis Marion College in 1982. Further demonstrating her commitment to service, Glover served in the United States Army from 1974 to 1977. She also served on the Florence School District One School Board of Trustees from 1983 to 1989.
A Resolution Worthy of Reputation
The Resolution formally requesting the name change emphasized the appropriateness of this act of recognition for Glover, given her many contributions to the community. The resolution also expressed its hope that the Department of Transportation would comply with the request to name the portion of Sumter Street as “Senator Maggie Glover Way” and erect appropriate markers along the way.
The Chair of the Florence Democratic Party was among those who spoke warmly about Glover, saying, “Maggie Glover’s contributions to the community, her leadership, and her impact on local politics and social causes are so honorable and real. Her legacy shall live on forever. This is truly a remarkable day to witness. We love Maggie Glover.”
This sentiment seemed to echo throughout the gathering, showing that decades after serving in official capacity, Maggie Glover’s influence is still very much alive in the hearts of many. The honorific naming of “Senator Maggie Glover Way” stands to ensure that her legacy will be known to even more generations who travel Florence streets.
