Florence Police Discover Shocking Living Conditions and Venomous Snakes After Bite Incident

Florence Police Encounter Shocking Conditions After Venomous Snake Bite

In Florence, South Carolina, authorities recently stumbled upon a scene straight out of a horror movie after responding to a call about a man bitten by a venomous snake. The police were alerted last Friday when Jeffrey Leibowitz was bitten by an inland taipan snake, a species notorious for having the most toxic venom in the snake world. As officers arrived on the scene, they quickly realized that the situation was far worse than they could have imagined.

A Dangerous Encounter

According to police reports, the bite occurred between Leibowitz’s index finger and thumb. Given that this particular snake is native to Australia, it raised eyebrows about how it ended up in Florence. Unfortunately, this wasn’t just another case of someone owning a pet snake; it turned out that Leibowitz owned a shocking total of 14 venomous snakes.

To make matters worse, reports indicated that there was a shortage of antivenom for the inland taipan due to a previous bite incident involving the same type of snake only months earlier. Thankfully, Leibowitz’s father told the officers that his son had been treated with antivenom, but as of Tuesday morning, he remained in serious condition at a local hospital.

Living Conditions That Alarmed Officers

The tale takes a dramatic twist as police ventured inside Leibowitz’s apartment. What they found shocked them: “substandard living conditions” that posed significant health risks not just for Leibowitz but also for the community. Before even stepping foot inside the apartment, officers noticed a troubling number of flies visible through the windows. Once they entered, they were met with an overwhelming stench of ammonia, feces, and rotting food.

Take a moment to imagine walking into a space where a cat bed is soaked in urine and feces, raw meat is left out in the open, and fly larvae crawl around overflowed garbage bags. Reports described open yogurt containers and spoiled cat food littering the floor. So unbearable was the smell that some officers had to step outside just to breathe!

Assessing the Snakes’ Conditions

Upon further inspection, police discovered that Leibowitz had only been living in these conditions for a short couple of months. In addition to the snakes, which were kept in poorly secured plastic totes, authorities found two cats in desperate need of help. Thank goodness for Animal Control, who stepped in to take care of the feline residents.

To assess the snakes’ living arrangements, the Assistant Chief of Wildlife, Will Dillman, checked their enclosures. It became clear that the plastic totes used were “below acceptable standards” and could easily allow the snakes to escape, creating a public safety hazard.

Social Media Fame Comes with Risks

Interestingly, as the investigation continued, police learned that Leibowitz was somewhat of a local celebrity on social media, known for showcasing his impressive collection of venomous snakes. In one Facebook video, he even made a plea for antivenom soon after the bite incident. It seemed that his passion for snakes was becoming a dangerous hobby.

What Happens Next?

As officers searched for a solution, it dawned on them that finding a suitable home for the snakes would be more complicated than expected. Various organizations and zoos, including River Banks Zoo and others, were reluctant to accept the snakes due to the risks associated with their conditions.

Eventually, the situation took a heart-wrenching turn. After deliberation, officials reached out to Leibowitz’s father, who made the difficult decision to authorize the euthanization of the snakes under such harrowing circumstances. The fate of these creatures highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership, especially when it comes to wild and venomous species.

This shocking incident serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with owning exotic pets and the potential dangers they can pose, not just to their owners but to the community at large. It’s a story that will stay with Florence residents for quite some time.
