Pipe Flushing Initiative Aims to Quell Water Discoloration Concerns in Florence

It has been officially announced that the department will embark on a pipe flushing initiative targeting the lines along Alligator Road aiming at resolving the water discoloration concerns.

Closely working in consultation with mechanical and civil engineers, the city determined a systematic flushing initiative as an effective solution to tackle the long-endured issue. In this technique, high-pressure water will be employed to scour the pipeline network to rid it of accumulated iron sediments, the chief cause believed to result in the discoloration of the water.
The initiative is part of an extensive remedial procedure and considering the vast expanse of the Alligator Road area, the work has been scheduled to be performed in sections. The flushing treatment is due to commence on Monday, Aug. 5, and expected to conclude by Wednesday, Aug. 7.
Residents Briefed About The Flushing Procedure
As the high-pressure flushing process gets underway, residents in the affected regions have been alerted to anticipate low water pressure. This is an unavoidable side effect due to the technical requirements of the flushing procedure which will be in progress for those days. The operation will take place during the late-night hours from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. This timing was chosen optimally to ensure minimal disruption to the residents’ daily water usage needs.
Prior Efforts to Improve Water Quality
Even earlier this month, there was a significant repair undertaken. A 36-inch valve in the Frank E. Willis Pee Dee Regional water treatment plant in Florence was replaced. The city authorities had highlighted then that this measure was aimed at addressing and improving complaints about water quality as well as the prevailing pressure issues.
