Following a system-wide water pressure problem that recently impacted the city of Florence, city officials have released an insightful report detailing their investigations, observations, and resultant steps to prevent reoccurrence.
After resuscitating the City of Florence Surface Water Treatment plant and reinstating the water system pressures on August 15th, the city staff performed the necessary bacteriological acquisition. They sampled and tested water from different sections of the water system the next day. By the afternoon of August 18th, the boil advisory that had been in effect was officially lifted.
This week, all city utility personnel were briefed, and an in-depth timeline was produced to allow the public to follow the progression of events, and to discover potential areas for improvement to prevent a repeat of the issue in the future.
The city management in her quest to eliminate water quality concerns has employed the services of CDM Smith. The firm, recognized for its feat in designing and supervising the construction of the Surface Water treatment plant, will be in charge of on-site training and will partner with city staff and AECOM, the designated water/sewer consultation and engineering firm for the city, to make improvements to both surface and groundwater systems.
City Manager, Scotty Davis, expressed his regret over the inconvenience experienced by customers, saying, “On behalf of the City of Florence, I apologize for the inconvenience to our customers over the past weekend. I would like to ensure the public that City Council has allocated necessary resources to improve water quality for our customers. We are working diligently to put necessary protocols in place to restore trust and confidence in those we serve.”
The public can access the detailed timeline and findings on the city’s website.
