‘We deserve better:’ Florence NAACP disappointed in school’s controversial post
The Florence Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has expressed disappointment in response to controversial photos posted on social media by Royall Elementary School. The photos depicted two teachers wearing t-shirts with the insignia ‘U.S. Border Patrol’ standing in front of a brick wall, representing Mexico for a school event. These images have since been removed following criticisms from members of the community, who labeled them as insensitive.
The Controversial Event
The event, marking Royall’s first week of school celebration, intended to highlight various international cultures. But the depiction of staff donning border patrol attire opposing a depiction of Mexico stirred unrest within the local community, ultimately leading to the removal of these photos.
In a statement, the NAACP said, “The Florence Branch of the NAACP would like to express our profound disappointment in the actions during the ‘Olympic parade’ at Royal Elementary School in Florence One Schools. We have followed the developments online, in the community, and in the media. We have also contacted local elected officials.”
NAACP’s Stance
The NAACP further clarified that such actions perpetuated an agenda that was unsuitable for public schools, as they could incite confusion and conflict within the school, the community, and social media platforms, emphasizing the need for stronger accountability among those entrusted with children’s education.
“Among our commitments is a keen interest in monitoring the actions of Superintendent Dr. Richard O’Malley concerning this matter’s resolution. We will continue to advocate for a fair and just resolution,” the organization concluded.
School’s and District’s Response
Dr. Richard O’Malley, the Superintendent of Florence 1 Schools, issued an official statement addressing the controversial posts. He described the staff’s behavior as inexcusable, assuring the community that those involved faced due accountability for their actions. He added that there was no room for such displays in their schools and that he would not tolerate it within the school district.
In its apology, the school expressed regret, acknowledging their posts as showing ‘insensitive disregard’ for the challenges faced by the Hispanic population. They reaffirmed their commitment to celebrating their students’ diversity and looking forward to fostering improved relationships in the new school year.
State Superintendent’s Response Awaited
As the issue continues to unfold, the broader education community expects a statement from South Carolina’s State Superintendent’s Office.
