FLORENCE — The city of Florence is shining bright with community spirit as local organizations roll up their sleeves to combat food insecurity. With partly cloudy skies overhead and pleasant temperatures reaching a high of 73°F, community members are coming together to lend a helping hand to those in need. The generosity of the Florence area is truly commendable, particularly with the critical work being done by Harvest Hope Pee Dee and My Brothers Keeper Shelter.
According to Feeding America, there are around 16,910 residents in Florence County facing food insecurity. That’s a staggering 12.3 percent of the county’s approximately 137,000 population. But thanks to dedicated organizations, efforts are in full swing to create solutions and bring better days ahead for these families.
One of the leading fighters against hunger is Harvest Hope. The organization has made great strides in gathering food from grocery stores and distributing it to various partner agencies. Chief Executive Officer Erinn Rowe emphasized their goal: “We aim to obtain the food our partner agencies need, so they can assist those who are struggling.” Harvest Hope has even moved the entire inventory online, allowing agencies to order supplies to meet their specific needs. Isn’t that a fantastic development?
To make food distribution even more accessible, Harvest Hope has introduced a new initiative called Mobile Markets. These mobile units operate from the parking lots of partnering agencies, providing a market-like experience where neighbors can select what they need for their families without feeling ashamed. “We want everyone to feel comfortable using our services,” Rowe stated, encapsulating the warmth behind this initiative.
In collaboration with the University of South Carolina, students studying supply chain and logistics are diving deep into understanding the needs of the community. They are developing a heat map of food requirements across the county, significantly optimizing the resource allocation for Harvest Hope. This integrated approach is set to enhance the organization’s ability to tackle food insecurity effectively across the state.
Another driving force in the fight against hunger is My Brothers Keeper Shelter, founded in 2019 after a government shutdown led to increased hardship in the community. With a focus on providing basic necessities, the shelter has made significant achievements in its short years. In 2023, they handed out over 65,000 meals and have expanded their services to include hot showers, clean clothes, hygiene products, and even spiritual support.
Every day, My Brothers Keeper delivers around 250 meals, with hot food reaching four local parks in Florence. The organization is also going the extra mile to help homeless students in the Timmonsville area. Now, with a small fleet of their own vehicles, they’ve come a long way from relying on personal cars to making these vital deliveries.
Collaboration is at the heart of My Brothers Keeper. Partnering with over 20 agencies, including Harvest Hope and local businesses like Chick-fil-A and Pepsi, the shelter has built a foundation of support that quintessentially embodies the community spirit. “Our organization is centered around partnership,” says Elder Henry Badie Jr., a board member, emphasizing the importance of working together for a common cause.
The future is looking hopeful, as Harvest Hope, My Brothers Keeper, and their partner agencies plan to continue their efforts in alleviating food insecurity within the Pee Dee region. Through determination, kindness, and collaboration, the Florence community is surely on its way towards assuring that all its residents have access to nutritious food and support.
