This past weekend, the charming city of Florence, South Carolina, transformed into a foodie paradise as two exciting festivals took center stage. Both the Kickin’ Chicken Win and Chili Festival ran through Friday, while the Foodees Fest food and culture festival occurred from Friday to Sunday at the popular Magnolia Mall. Residents and visitors alike gathered to indulge in mouth-watering dishes, enjoy lively entertainment, and embrace the warm sense of community that these festivals fostered.
On Saturday morning, the smell of grilled meats filled the air as Stirling Pope checked on his smoker at the Foodees Fest. As the Vice President of Operations for the festival, Kris Osborne, shared her vision, it was clear that this was more than just a celebration of food; it was a gathering designed to bring people together. “We are a traveling food truck festival that goes all over the southeast,” she explained enthusiastically.
The Foodees Fest brilliantly set up on the east end of the mall’s parking lot, showcasing a vibrant collection of food trucks and pop-up shelters. Visitors were treated to a diverse array of food options, from kettle korn and lemonade to Korean corndogs and mouth-watering barbecue. There was something for every palate. Plus, the festival included a kids zone, featuring haunted houses and arts and crafts, ensuring that families could enjoy a full day of activities.
“We have a little bit of everything,” Osborne beamed. The timing of the festival was intentional, as autumn is a perfect season to celebrate fall traditions and savor the harvest. “Fall is not only a great time to do Halloween and fall festivals but also make sure you enjoy the harvest,” she noted.
The Foodees Fest ran through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., offering free parking and free admission to all. Of course, visitors were encouraged to indulge in the delicious offerings from the various vendors, which would require a bit of spending money. One particularly charming highlight of the festival was the trick-or-treating opportunity available to children. “All the vendors have trick and treating for the kids. Kids don’t need to be in costume,” Osborne explained, emphasizing the festival’s inclusive spirit.
As attendees meandered through the vibrant booths, it was easy to see how food festivals like the Foodees Fest serve not only as a source of entertainment but also as a means of cultural connection. Vendors like Corrine Fox, who set up a stall dedicated to crocheting, showcased the talent of local artisans, while others like Chi Chi Sutton delighted festival-goers with her beautifully arranged herbs. The emphasis on creativity and community made the festival feel alive with the spirit of togetherness.
As the sun set over Florence, the scents of spiced and grilled dishes wafted through the air, reminding everyone of the fantastic weekend they had just experienced. With friendly conversations buzzing amid laughter and the sounds of local music, it was surely a weekend that showcased the very best of what the community had to offer.
The blend of flavor, fun, and fellowship at the Kickin’ Chicken Win and Foodees Fest ensured that Florence was the place to be for food lovers, and it certainly set the bar high for future community gatherings!
