Florence “Forget Me Not” 5K Taking Place on Saturday, August 17

The Florence Rotary Club is all set to host the much-anticipated “Forget Me Not” 5K race on Saturday, August 17. This event was designed to both raise awareness and vital funds for Alzheimer’s research. The initiative first kicked off six years ago but had to pause during the COVID-19 pandemic.

David Wansley, the race’s chairman, shared, “Florence Rotary Club is the oldest and largest civic club in Florence. It’s a bit over 100 years old and is made up of business and civic leaders. They meet weekly and have programs on various topics including Alzheimer’s, but there are other causes that the Rotary Club is passionate about championing. This includes everything from drug prevention for young school children to providing dictionaries for third-grade students in Florence County.”

Runners are encouraged to sign-up not only for an energizing exercise, but to support a truly worthy cause. As Wansley explained, “You’re supporting a great cause to show support for the families that have are experiencing Alzheimer’s and their families. As well as supporting efforts to eliminate a major cause of disease and death in South Carolina.”

The Route and the Cause

The scenic race will start on Dargan Street and go along West Cheves near Circle Park. To ensure the safety of the participants, police officers will be on-site controlling the traffic.

As sponsors make donations to the cause, Wansley expressed his gratitude but also hoped for more supporters. He stated, “That shows that we have support, but we certainly would love to have more. But I think that over a period of time, it will grow.”

The “Forget Me Not” 5K is more than just a race, it is an advocacy event and fundraiser expected to raise between $15,000 and $20,000 for Alzheimer’s research and for supporting local families through the Florence Alzheimer’s association.

An Event for Everyone

The Rotary Club also wants to remind everyone that the race is for anyone looking to have a good time. Wansley added, “We have people who are serious runners, others are serious walkers and some people are just there for a leisurely stroll – but regardless, their support for the effort is greatly appreciated.”

Whether you’re a competitive runner, a brisk walker, or just someone ready to enjoy a leisurely walk for a good cause, the “Forget Me Not” 5K is open for everyone. After all, every stride forward is a step towards fighting Alzheimer’s.
