Florence, SC — This past week has been an exhilarating time for Francis Marion University (FMU) as both their men’s and women’s basketball teams put on spectacular performances, capturing the attention of fans and sports enthusiasts alike. With excitement buzzing around the court, the men’s team pulled off a stunning victory over Erskine College with a score of 79-73 in a pivotal Conference Carolinas showdown.
In the thrilling clash, junior guard Jordan Simpson stood out, demonstrating his talent by racking up an impressive 15 points. His skills on the court proved to be a driving force for the undefeated Patriots. Coming in hot off the bench was freshman forward Alex Atkinson, who contributed a solid 14 points along with 8 rebounds, showcasing his potential within the squad.
Additionally, junior forward Latavian Lawrence, a proud alumnus of Gray Collegiate Academy, added 10 points to the team’s score. Another standout was sophomore center Trinity Delaney, who contributed 11 points to the Eagles’ win, capping off a well-rounded offensive display. With this significant victory, the FMU women have raised their record to an impressive 12-3 overall and 7-1 in conference play, while Erskine regrettably slipped to 3-12 overall and 2-8 in the league.
But the excitement doesn’t stop there! Center Lauryn Taylor has taken the spotlight by smashing records in a recent game against North Greenville. In a jaw-dropping performance, she achieved an NCAA record with 44 rebounds, leaving fans and pundits alike in awe. This incredible feat surpassed the previous Division II record of 36 rebounds and even eclipsed the all-division record of 40 rebounds. Taylor’s incredible rebounding breakdown included 30 defensive boards and 14 offensive, with a staggering 16 rebounds accumulated in just the first quarter.
In addition to her rebounding prowess, Taylor also set a new career high with 34 points in the same game, marking her 18th double-double of the season. It was a thrilling night, specifically for Taylor, as she eclipsed her own previous rebounding record of 21, which she had set just a month earlier against Lees-McRae.
