Francis Marion in Florence Experiences Robust Growth and Undergoes Significant Renovations

In Florence, South Carolina, Francis Marion University is embarking on an exciting period of growth and transformation. Over the past two years, the university has launched numerous building projects and renovations to accommodate the needs of emerging programs and the increasing number of students. This progress underlines the university’s commitment to providing quality educational experiences and cultivating student success.

Modernization of Historic Smith University Center

Built in 1973, the Smith University Center is one of the original buildings on campus. This historical structure has undergone a comprehensive renovation, which was completed in December 2023. The upgraded center provides an inspiring environment for students and faculty, fostering collaboration and innovation.

New Campus Signage

Matching the grandeur of the renovated campuses, a new signage has been installed at the school’s entrance. The signage complements the budding sense of community and pride at the university. SGA President Matthew Dixon expresses the school’s enthusiasm in embracing the expected growth, emphasizing that the students’ success and experiencing quality education remain their utmost priority.

New School of Business and Education Building

Showing its commitment to growth and expansion, the university has also invested in a new $23 million School of Business and Education building. The facility is state-of-the-art, designed to cater to the needs of modern education and provide an ideal environment for learning and creativity.

Introduction of Engineering Workshop

For programs requiring hands-on learning, a new 4,400-square-foot Engineering Workshop has been constructed. This space, which cost $1.37 million, is purposed to house heavy equipment and facilitate design projects. The workshop will predominantly serve students from industrial engineering and mechanical engineering programs.

Upcoming Programs and Continued Expansion

With the 2024-2025 academic year, Francis Marion University plans to launch a Bachelor of Science in Education, focusing on Multi-categorical Special Education: Autism Studies, Pre-K through 12. This program, the first of its type in South Carolina and one of only two in the southeastern United States, will emphasize meeting the needs of autistic individuals and students with other neurodevelopmental disorders. Hence, it provides a compelling blend of academic rigor and hands-on practical experience.
