Sponsor Our ArticlesIn a remarkable start to the season, Francis Marion University freshman point guard Kiara Croskey has been honored as the Conference Carolinas Women’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week for her outstanding performance during the week of November 4-10, 2024. This recognition not only highlights her personal achievements but also brings attention to the competitive spirit of the Patriots’ basketball program.
Croskey hails from Sumter, South Carolina, where she showcased her skills at Sumter High School. In her first two collegiate games, Croskey demonstrated her versatility on the court, averaging 9.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.5 steals per game. She also had an impressive shooting percentage of 63.6% from the field, further solidifying her as a valuable asset to the team.
In her debut against Coker University, Croskey played the entire 40 minutes and recorded 14 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals, contributing significantly to a Patriot defense that restricted the Cobras to a shooting percentage of 38.6%. In the following match against Wingate University, she added to her tally with five points, four rebounds, two assists, and three steals, continuing her strong defensive play as the Patriots held the Bulldogs to a shooting percentage of 38.7%.
The Francis Marion Patriots (1-1) are set to host the 24th-ranked Columbus State University (2-0) on Wednesday, November 13, at 5:30 PM. Fans can look forward to an exciting matchup at the Smith University Center, with admission priced at $10 for adults and $5 for students. Notably, FMU students will be admitted free of charge upon presenting identification.
This accolade is significant as it showcases not only Croskey’s individual talent but also the potential of the entire Francis Marion basketball team. As a biology major, Croskey balances her academic responsibilities while excelling in sports, exemplifying the student-athlete model. Her performance is a source of pride for the university and its supporters, setting high expectations for the rest of the season.
In addition to the basketball accolades, the Francis Marion University women’s soccer team has also made headlines, as seven of its players were named to the 2024 Conference Carolinas All-Conference team. This includes junior forward Kristina Syragakis, who earned the title of Offensive Player of the Year.
Syragakis emerged as a key player for the team, leading the conference in scoring with 17 goals and seven assists this season. Her performance has placed her second in the all-time program scores, making her a standout player in the league. The soccer team has achieved a record of 10-2-4 this year, marking their first ten-win season since 2007.
The women’s soccer team is set to compete in the Conference Carolinas Tournament, where they will face UNC Pembroke in the semifinals on Friday, November 15, at 1:45 PM. Tickets for the tournament can be purchased online, and all students from member institutions will receive free admission.
As both the basketball and soccer programs at Francis Marion University rise to prominence, the talents of players like Kiara Croskey and Kristina Syragakis highlight the strength and potential of FMU athletics. Fans are encouraged to support the teams as they strive for success in their respective leagues this season.
