Florence, South Carolina – What an electrifying weekend for Francis Marion University’s (FMU) sports teams! The excitement was palpable as both the softball and baseball squads achieved remarkable victories, leaving fans buzzing with enthusiasm. Let’s dive into the highlights!
The FMU softball team demonstrated outstanding skill and teamwork by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader against Catawba College. The Patriots triumphed with scores of 11-1 and 6-2, marking a remarkable continuation of their success and extending their current winning streak to a jaw-dropping 14 games. With this victory, FMU improved their season record to 18-2.
Junior shortstop Madalyn White stepped up to the plate and really impressed, leading the charge for FMU’s offense with an incredible performance. She racked up three hits, crossed home plate five times, and drove in one run of her own, solidifying her role as a key player. Thanks to her stellar efforts, White has now extended her hitting streak to an impressive 13 games.
In the first game, junior left-hander Alyssa Poston took the mound and pitched 4.1 innings, allowing only one run on three hits while striking out four batters. FMU wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, scoring three runs in the first inning, including an RBI single from Kendal Miller. The excitement didn’t stop there, as two additional runs came due to a dropped pop-up by Catawba’s defense, showcasing the team’s opportunistic play.
As if that wasn’t enough, Tallulah Civoniceva hit a spectacular solo home run in the third inning, putting FMU ahead by a comfortable 5-0. The Patriots invoked the 8-run mercy rule in game one with a decisive six-run fourth inning. Catawba did manage to spoil the shutout with a solo home run from Jordan McCorkle in the fifth inning, but it was too little, too late.
Game two brought more thrills, starting with Emily Konz leading the charge with an RBI double that gave FMU a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Catawba fought back with a tying solo homer from Brianna Gallagher in the fourth inning. However, the Patriots weren’t done yet! White scored the go-ahead run in the fifth, setting the stage for a big sixth inning where FMU scored four times, including a well-placed hit from Civoniceva and another mistake from Catawba’s defense. Gallagher added her second solo homer in the sixth, but the game ended with FMU still triumphant.
Meanwhile, the FMU baseball team had its share of thrills as well, emerging victorious against Young Harris College in an extra-inning thriller. Owen Taylor shined like a star, recording three hits and driving in the go-ahead run during the 5-3 victory. Before this magnificent finish, however, FMU narrowly lost the first game of the doubleheader to Young Harris with a score of 6-5, after Young Harris rallied to score three runs in the ninth inning.
In the second game, FMU’s Rijnaldo Euson took the mound and delivered a stellar performance, allowing only six hits over seven innings while striking out a remarkable eleven batters. The Patriots’ record now stands at 12-6 overall and 3-5 in Conference Carolinas. A final game of the series against Young Harris is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday, and fans are eagerly looking forward to another chance for their team to shine!
With the softball team set to open Conference Carolinas play on Thursday against Barton College at 4 p.m., the stage is set for more heart-pounding action. Fans are encouraged to come out and support these talented young athletes as they continue their quest for victory!
It’s a thrilling time for FMU Athletics, and if this weekend is any indication, there are plenty of exciting moments yet to come! Go Patriots!
