Greenville Community Unites in Remembrance of Two Beloved Residents

Greenville, South Carolina, is full of heart today as friends and family come together to remember two well-loved members of the community, William Milton “Bill” Sumerel and Ronald Bernard Parker, who both passed away recently. Their lives were a tapestry of passions, commitments, and love that have profoundly impacted everyone around them.

A Fond Farewell to Bill Sumerel

Bill Sumerel, who celebrated his 86th birthday on May 4, 2024, passed away peacefully at his home on December 18, 2024, surrounded by his family. Born in Laurens, South Carolina, Bill pursued his education ardently, earning a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Clemson University in 1961 after attending Presbyterian College. He built a commendable career with Davis Electrical Constructors, where he worked for an impressive forty years. His journey took him even to places like Northern Ireland and Scotland, showcasing not only his professional skills but also his adventurous spirit.

Bill was a dedicated family man. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Rosemarie Traeger Sumerel, whom he cherished for nearly sixty years, along with their three children: William Milton Sumerel, Jr., Leigh Sumerel Yarbrough, and Mary Maurice Sumerel Young. The home was often filled with the laughter and love of their grandchildren who adored their grandfather: Will, Molly, Rosemarie, Charlotte, Eleanor, Lane, Traeger, and Mary Frances.

Those who knew Bill described him as a practical and precise individual. He had a keen mind for managing time and resources, and he was recognized for his disdain for foolishness. While he was known to steer clear of baked chicken and loud noises, he found joy in travel, crossword puzzles, and the fresh vegetables he loved to grow.

A faithful member of Christ Church Episcopal, Bill dedicated his time to volunteering for organizations like Meals on Wheels, showcasing his generous heart. Even after his retirement in 2004, Bill’s commitment to his community continued to shine. A celebration of his life will be held on January 3, 2025, at Christ Church Episcopal, at 2:00 p.m., where friends and family will gather to honor his legacy.

Honoring Ronald Parker

Meanwhile, Ronald Parker, known for his big heart and expansive friend circle, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on December 14, 2024, at Prisma Hospital after battling Parkinson’s and seizures. Ronald was born on December 21, 1956, in Monroe, North Carolina, growing up to become a man of many talents and an affable spirit who managed to leave a lasting impression on all he met.

A proud lifetime member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Ronald’s love for music shone through as he played the trumpet in the church band. After attending Clemson University, he became an entrepreneur, founding A-1 Auto, where he worked passionately until his retirement in 2020. Even after retiring, his friends and family would often reach out for advice on vehicle repairs, highlighting the respect they had for his knowledge and skill.

Ronald’s love for adventure was evident in his hobbies which included everything from snow skiing to scuba diving. A private pilot and an avid Clemson football fan, he lived life to the fullest. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Jan, their daughter Ronni, and his beloved mother Freida N. Parker. The community mourns his passing but also celebrates the joy he brought to those around him. A visitation for Ronald will take place on December 19, 2024, followed by a Celebration of Life at 2:00 p.m.

Sharing Love Through Memories

The losses of Bill and Ronald are felt deeply throughout Greenville. As the community gathers to share stories, reminisce about their love for life, and extend their kindness to others, a sense of strength emerges. Both men lived lives dedicated to family, service, and passions, leaving behind legacies that will be cherished forever.

In lieu of flowers, their families kindly ask for memorials to be made to Meals on Wheels for Bill and Aldersgate United Methodist Church for Ronald. Through these acts of kindness, their spirits will inevitably continue to thrive in the hearts of many.
