Florence came alive on the evening of November 12 as locals gathered for a good cause at the Florence Area Literacy Council’s Grown-Up Spelling Bee! Taking place at the comfortable Staybridge Suites, the event turned out to be an engaging blend of friendly competition, delicious tacos, and the noble aim of raising funds for literacy in the community.
The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement as teams gathered to vie for the coveted title of best spellers in town. Spelling bees, traditionally for kids, took on a new charm as adults stepped up to the plate, showcasing their spelling prowess while supporting a crucial cause. Before the spelling challenge kicked off, attendees lined up to enjoy a hearty taco dinner, fueling up for the brainy battle ahead.
As the night progressed, tension and laughter filled the room. Teams huddled together, strategizing and sometimes second-guessing their spelling skills. It was all in good fun, with the audience cheering them on. The staging of a spelling bee, however, wasn’t just about the competition; it had a far more important purpose.
The Florence Area Literacy Council, headed by Executive Director Christina Lawson, emphasized the event’s importance. “Did you know that 33 percent of Florence County residents are functionally illiterate?” she asked the captivated audience. This staggering statistic adds gravity to the council’s mission and further motivates support for reducing those numbers.
As the spelling bee commenced, participants faced off against each other, spelling increasingly complex words. The judges, who included local business figures like Brian Harrelson from Ruiz Foods and Dailihana Alfonseca, a volunteer and author, kept a keen eye on the unfolding drama. With amusing moments and nail-biting challenges, the night was far from ordinary.
Standout teams included A&J Firearms, who correctly spelled their word in the second round, and the Anderson Brother’s Bank Bees, who confidently discussed their strategies. Each team represented different businesses and organizations in the community, coming together to not only compete but also to champion literacy.
After a fun-filled evening of twisting tongues and spelling showdowns, The Post and Courier Pee Dee team emerged victorious, claiming the title by correctly spelling the word antinome—something that contradicts! The triumph was celebrated with cheers, and the team was presented with a trophy by Christina Lawson and the event’s host, Brad Richardson.
The buzz didn’t stop there! As attendees enjoyed the festivities, they also contributed to the fundraising efforts. Christina mentioned that although specific totals were still being counted, she estimates that the event raised approximately $11,000 for the Florence Area Literacy Council. This money will go directly to programs aimed at improving literacy rates in the community.
The Grown-Up Spelling Bee was a fantastic evening filled with warmth, laughter, and community spirit. As participants and onlookers packed up, it was clear that they were part of something special, contributing to a cause that affects many lives in Florence. With continued efforts like this, we can hope to see those illiteracy numbers decrease in the near future.
Kudos to everyone involved for making the night a success! Until next year, keep practicing those spellings, Florence!
