Florence is a city that has been brought to a standstill as it grieves the loss of a beloved community member, Shawn Hobson Peters. This beautiful soul passed away on Friday afternoon, August 30, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. As news of her passing spread, friends and family began to reflect on the profound impact Shawn had on their lives.
Shawn’s life was one filled with compassion, laughter, and dedication to her family. Born in Florence County as the cherished daughter of Johnny F. and Gale Bischke Hobson, she embraced life’s challenges with grace and humor. She was a proud member of the First Free Will Baptist Church, where she not only found her spiritual home but also a vibrant community that she cherished deeply.
Professionally, Shawn worked as a Radiology Technician at McLeod Family Practice in Timmonsville. She was regarded as a true “Jack-of-all-trades,” fully embracing her role with enthusiasm and dedication. Her colleagues admired her unwavering support and willingness to lend a helping hand, making her an invaluable member of the healthcare team.
Shawn is survived by her husband of ten years, Patrick J. Peters, and her daughters Kaylee Gibbs, Hannah Gibbs, Cydney Turner, Kristen (Wayne) Gamble, and Caroline Peters. Her son, Donnelly (Sara) Peters, along with her sister Angie (Jimmy) Bessenger, also continue to carry her memory in their hearts. She was known as a devoted daughter, sister, and friend to many.
Shawn’s love for her family was matched only by her love for the outdoors. She often spent time fishing, a hobby that brought her peace and joy. There was nothing she enjoyed more than feeding her ducks or putting together puzzles with her loved ones. These moments of simple pleasure painted her days with warmth and happiness and will be fondly remembered by those she leaves behind.
In honor of Shawn, a funeral service will be held at the First Free Will Baptist Church in Florence, scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 4, 2024. Following the service, Shawn will be laid to rest in Mount Hope Cemetery. For those wishing to pay their respects, the family will host a time of visitation on the evening preceding the funeral, Tuesday, September 3rd, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home.
As the community gathers to honor Shawn’s memory, many are seeking ways to memorialize her legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the First Free Will Baptist Church at 2624 W. Palmetto Street, Florence, SC 29501, or to the McLeod Foundation in care of McLeod Hospice, P.O. Box 100551, Florence, SC 29501. The support from the community during this difficult time is a testament to the love Shawn spread throughout her life.
As we reflect on her life, we encourage everyone to remember the joy and love she brought to all. The guestbook is open for signatures online, allowing everyone to share their thoughts and sympathies with the family during this time of mourning.
In times of loss, grief can feel overwhelming, but it is essential to remember we are not alone. As we cope with the loss of Shawn Hobson Peters, let’s come together as a community, offering support and love to one another. Holding on to the memories of Shawn can guide us through these dark days and remind us of the light she brought into our lives.
