The accident shut down all southbound lanes, leading to hours of congestion as crews worked to clear the scene. By 11:20 a.m., traffic resumed, but complications continued over the weekend with separate accidents resulting in fatalities and additional disruptions. Drivers are urged to remain cautious and look for alternate routes during heavy traffic.
If you were traveling near Florence on Friday morning, chances are you experienced some serious traffic delays. It all kicked off around 3:10 a.m. when a significant crash occurred on I-95 South, right around mile marker 179. The wreck involved an 18-wheeler and it took nearly eight hours for the situation to be cleared up. By 11:20 a.m., travelers were finally back on their way, although it wasn’t smooth sailing for all.
Initially, the entire southbound lanes were completely shut down, causing a hectic situation. As traffic alerts rolled in, drivers were informed that I-95 southbound was closed between Exit 181 and Exit 170. If you were planning a trip, you might have wished you were using Waze that morning! The app labeled the crash as “minor,” though no updates were available on whether anyone was injured. It’s always a good reminder to be cautious out there!
Thanks to the unfortunate crash, significant traffic delays were on the menu. Drivers found themselves stuck in long lines and many opted to look for alternate routes to avoid the mess. A quick peek at a live camera feed from the South Carolina Department of Transportation clearly showed the southbound traffic crawling along. Vehicles were backed up as crews worked diligently not far from Dunbarton Drive, trying their best to clear the scene.
The second accident occurred earlier that Sunday at about 6:40 a.m. on Highway 52, where a collision between a 2008 Lexus LS 460 and a 2001 Ford Mustang resulted in one fatality and one injury. The driver of the Mustang tragically died at the scene while the driver of the Lexus was taken to the hospital. Both drivers were the only occupants of their vehicles, further emphasizing the need for responsible driving.
It’s clear that accidents like these have a significant impact not only on those involved but also on the traffic flow in the entire region. With drivers being extra cautious and looking for detours, it’s a complex web of road interactions and frustration. As we move into the weekend, it’s a good idea for everyone to keep their safety in mind and to drive responsibly. Ensure that you’re taking extra precautions, whether you’re running errands or heading out for a long drive.
Let’s hope that the highways become safer soon and that folks can get to their destinations without a hitch. Safe travels out there, Florence!
