A traffic nightmare unfolded on Wednesday afternoon when a horrific four-vehicle pileup occurred on Interstate 95, close to Florence. The collision has sadly claimed the life of a 50-year-old woman from Charlotte, North Carolina, as confirmed by the county coroner. The victim has been identified as Michelle Lehnhardt Clelland.
The terrifying crash scene blocked the northbound lanes of I-95 near Florence for several nerve-wracking hours on Wednesday afternoon. Initial reports from the South Carolina Highway Patrol indicate that Clelland was driving a 2021 Nissan Rouge at the time of the collision. Alongside the fatality, at least one other person was significantly injured and was promptly transported by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
The chain-reaction crash transpired around 3 p.m., approximately 2 miles north of Florence, between mile-markers 169 and 170. Every vehicle involved in the disastrous pileup – a 2002 Toyota Tundra, the victim’s 2021 Nissan Rogue, a 2017 Toyota Corolla, and a 2010 Ford F-350 pickup – were all moving in a northerly direction when the crash occurred. No additional information about how the catastrophe unfolded is currently available.
In an interview on Wednesday night, the Coroner Keith von Lutcken confirmed the death of one individual and noted that several other victims sustained “significant injuries”. Along with this, an unknown number of individuals were swiftly transported to area hospitals. For now, the South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. Further details are expected to be released in the coming days.
This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safe driving. As we await further details, our thoughts go out to all those affected by this tragedy. May this also act as a reminder for us all to drive safely and responsibly, to ensure both our well-being and that of others on the road.
