In a touching ceremony filled with wagging tails and heartfelt farewells, North Myrtle Beach said goodbye to one of its beloved heroes, K-9 Johnny Cash, who officially retired on November 7, 2024. This remarkable all-black German Shepherd, who hails from Slovakia, has spent the last six years with the North Myrtle Beach Police Department (NMBPD), leaving behind an impressive legacy of service and dedication.
Johnny Cash joined the North Myrtle Beach team in 2018, generously donated by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Department in Florida. During his time on the force, he has been involved in the arrest of a whopping 173 offenders. That’s no small feat for a pup! He played a critical role in tracking down 46 fleeing criminals and missing persons, demonstrating not only his skills but also his strong instincts as a K-9. As if that wasn’t enough, his keen nose helped remove countless pounds of dangerous narcotics from the streets, making North Myrtle Beach a safer place to live.
At the age of 10, Johnny Cash has started to show signs of arthritis, which has impacted his ability to work. The heartwarming bond between Johnny and his handler, Officer Scott St. Claire, has been apparent for years, with Officer St. Claire recognizing his partner’s remarkable obedience and hard work. It was clear that this incredible dog deserved some time off after giving so much to the community.
At the retirement ceremony, Johnny Cash was treated like the superstar he is. A joyous flurry of tennis balls echoed through the venue as delighted officers threw them for him to chase. This initiative recognized good behavior and academic achievements in elementary students, and because of K-9 Johnny Cash, many principals have reported significant improvements in student behavior.
