In a touching tribute to an influential public servant, the city of Florence, South Carolina, has chosen to name a portion of the city’s Sumter Street after a former senator. The section extending from the intersection with Alexander Street to its junction with McQueen Street now commemorates the endeavors of Senator Maggie Glover by adopting the moniker “Senator Maggie Glover Way.”
Almost a hundred attendees graced the ceremony that took place in the West Sumter Street area, a locality that has been home to Glover for the majority of her life. Despite the sweltering heat, Glover’s friends and family turned out in droves to show their unwavering support and love for her.
Respected for being an indefatigable leader who consistently strived to uplift the living standards of residents in Marion and Florence Counties, Glover leaves behind a laudable legacy. Renowned for her tenure as a member of the South Carolina General Assembly, she represented the House from 1989 to 1992 and subsequently the Senate from 1993 to 2004.
Recognizing her invaluable contributions, the resolution delineating this honorary act reads, “Whereas, it would be fitting and proper to recognize the many accomplishments of this daughter of South Carolina by naming a portion of highway in the City of Florence in her honor.”
Glover was born August 29, 1948, in Florence, to the late Fulton and Ethel Green Wallace. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fayetteville State University in 1970, she further pursued her education by gaining a Master of Education degree from Francis Marion College in 1982. Glover also served her country with distinction as a member of the United States Army from 1974 to 1977.
Prior to her political career, she featured prominently in the local community as a member of the Florence School District One School Board of Trustees from 1983 to 1989, thus showcasing her commitment to education provision from an early stage.
The Chair of the Florence Democratic Party lauded Glover’s array of contributions, observing “Maggie Glover’s contributions to the community, her leadership, and her impact on local politics or social causes is so honorable and real. Her legacy shall live on forever. This is truly a remarkable day to witness. We love Maggie Glover.”
This landmark decision makes it evident that Senator Maggie Glover’s immense influence left an indelible mark on South Carolina’s history.
