Road in Florence named in honor of former Senator

On a memorable and historic day in Florence, South Carolina, the city witnessed the renaming of a significant portion of Sumter Street after a revered former senator, Maggie Wallace Glover. The stretch of road from Alexander Street to McQueen Street now proudly carries the name “Senator Maggie Glover Way.”

A Celebratory Dedication

Revealing the newly christened road sign to nearly 100 supporters who endured the sweltering summer heat to participate in the heartwarming ceremony, the proceedings unfolded in the West Sumter Street area, a place where Glover spent most of her years. This act of homage speaks volumes about the communal love, respect and gratitude for the accomplished former senator.

Glover’s notable contributions

Often remembered as a tireless leader who fervently worked for the welfare of Florence and Marion Counties, Glover significantly impacted local politics, social causes, and made remarkable contributions to the community through her unfaltering leadership. Her service to her constituents while in the South Carolina General Assembly as a member of the House of Representatives from 1989 to 1992 and in the Senate from 1993 to 2004 is highly celebrated.

The Resolution

The resolution, which passed with unanimity, captured the essence of Maggie Wallace Glover’s legacy, “Whereas, the Honorable Maggie Wallace Glover was born on August 29, 1948, in Florence, the daughter of the late Fulton and Ethel Greene Wallace; and Whereas, Maggie received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Fayetteville State University in 1970. She furthered her education earning a Master of Education degree from Francis Marion College in 1982; and Whereas, she served her country with distinction as a member of the United States Army from 1974 to 1977; and Whereas, she was a member of the Florence School District One School Board of Trustees from 1983 to 1989; Now, therefore, be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring, that the portion of Sumter Street in the City of Florence from its intersection with Alexander Street to its intersection with McQueen Street be named ‘Senator Maggie Glover Way’ and erect appropriate markers or signs along this portion of the highway containing these words.”

Enduring Legacy

The Chair of the Florence Democratic Party, expressing sheer pride and obvious delight regarding the honor bestowed on Glover, had stated, “Maggie Glover’s contributions to the community, her leadership, and her impact on local politics or social causes are so honorable and real. Her legacy will live on forever. This is truly a remarkable day to witness. We love Maggie Glover.” Herein is a testament to the collective admiration for Glover and her enduring legacy that has been engrained into the fabric of the community of Florence.

This tribute, in the form of dedicated street bearing her name, stands as a potent reminder of Senator Maggie Glover’s life-long service, dedication, and commitment to improving the lives of the people of Florence and Marion Counties and beyond.
