Michelin’s debut in South Carolina signified a turning point for the region. The state’s economy transitioned from a reliance on textiles to a focus on advanced manufacturing. This evolution began in 1973, when construction kicked off at two sites in the Upstate. By 1974, the first material plant opened near Pendleton, followed by the production of finished tires in Greenville starting in 1975. Fast forward to today, and Michelin proudly operates 15 plants across South Carolina, directly supporting approximately 14,000 jobs annually.

During this event, Alexis Garcin, the outgoing CEO of Michelin North America, introduced his successor, Matthew Cabe. Also highlighted was the important role of factors like available land, proximity to ports, education, and skilled labor in attracting Michelin to South Carolina. Thanks to its strategic location, Michelin North America boasts 28% higher productivity levels than its competitors, further underscoring its competitive edge.
Another exciting aspect of Michelin’s presence in Greenville is the Michelin Americas Research Center (MARC). This facility is known for major innovations, including the groundbreaking Michelin X Tweel airless tire and tires designed for lunar rovers. These advancements not only enhance Michelin’s product lineup but also cater to the company’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
Over the years, Michelin has expanded its footprint in South Carolina, with multiple facilities in Duncan, Greenville, Sandy Springs, Spartanburg, and Starr. The company’s North American headquarters once resided in New York but relocated to Greenville in 1985, establishing a new era of growth with its current site construction starting in 1987. Recent expansions have seen new facilities take shape, including a mining tire facility in Lexington in 1998 and another in Anderson in 2013.
