Micky Dolenz to Rock Florence with “Songs and Stories” Concert on September 28

Florence Gears Up for a Night of Music with Micky Dolenz

Florence, South Carolina, is buzzing with excitement as the legendary Micky Dolenz, the last surviving member of the iconic 1960s band The Monkees, prepares to take the stage on September 28. Dolenz will be performing as part of his “Songs and Stories” tour at the Francis Marion University Performing Arts Center, and it’s shaping up to be a night to remember!

A Trip Down Memory Lane

When Micky Dolenz reflects on his career, he can’t help but think about the moments that moved him as a fan and as an artist. He recalls a time he was in England, attending a reunion show by the Everly Brothers at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall. “I remember hoping they would play ‘Wake Up Little Susie,’” Dolenz shared. As the audience erupted in cheers when the opening notes rang out, Dolenz felt a wave of emotion wash over him. “I cried with the crowd. It was such a powerful experience.” This is the kind of heartfelt connection Dolenz aims to recreate with his audiences.

“When I tour and perform songs from The Monkees, I want my fans to feel that same joy and nostalgia I felt at that concert,” he explained. “I remember thinking, if I ever get the chance to sing those songs, I’m going to make sure they get what they’re expecting.”

What to Expect at the Show

Fans can look forward to a fantastic evening filled with some of The Monkees’ greatest hits. Classics like “I’m a Believer” and “Last Train to Clarksville” will undoubtedly make appearances, alongside covers from other legendary artists of the era.

But it’s not just about the music; Dolenz weaves personal anecdotes into his performances, turning each song into a story of its own. “At first, I didn’t realize how much people loved hearing my stories,” Dolenz confessed. Once he posed the question to the crowd, “Anyone want to hear a story?” the enthusiastic response surprised him. “From that moment on, I knew my fans were eager to hear about the stories behind the songs.”

Family on Stage

Adding to the familial atmosphere of the concert, Dolenz will be joined on stage by his sister, Coco Dolenz. The duo has performed together for years, and Coco even provided background vocals on some of The Monkees’ songs. “We have a great rapport,” he said. “We can almost predict what the other will do on stage, which adds a unique flair to the performance.”

A Warm Welcome Awaits

As Dolenz makes his way to Florence, he is genuinely excited about returning to the South. “I love it down here. The charm and warmth of the people always enhance the experience,” he said. The concert will take place as part of the Performing Arts Center’s Spotlight Series, an event that has previously welcomed renowned acts like Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Dave Mason and the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.

A Hub for the Arts

With Southern Living dubbing Florence “a haven for art lovers,” the city has become an increasingly popular destination for artists of all genres. Bud Simmons, the director of the Performing Arts Center, expressed pride in their role as a cultural hub. “I like to think of us as the living room of the community. We’re a gathering place for everyone who loves the arts,” he said.

Mark Your Calendars!

The “Songs and Stories” concert is set for 7:30 pm on September 28, and tickets can be purchased from the Performing Arts Center’s website. Following Dolenz, the series will feature Gary Puckett and the Union Gap on October 2 and the Electric Light Orchestra Experience on November 22.

So gather your friends and family, and get ready for an unforgettable evening filled with music, stories, and a sprinkle of nostalgia as Micky Dolenz brings the magic of The Monkees to Florence!
