As the sun rises on September 15, the lovely coastal city of Myrtle Beach welcomes the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month, a time set aside to honor and celebrate the rich cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. With a variety of exciting events lined up, there’s no shortage of ways for residents and visitors to join in on the festivities!
A Brief History
National Hispanic Heritage Month wasn’t always the month-long celebration that it is today. It all started back in 1968 as a weeklong recognition under President Lyndon Johnson. But thanks to President Ronald Reagan, it expanded to a full month in 1988, running from September 15 to October 15. The chosen start date is significant; it marks the independence days of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. You might even know that Mexico celebrates its Independence Day on September 16 with ‘El Grito de Dolores’, a fiery occasion that kicks off the festive spirit.

The Chapin Memorial Library is gearing up for the month by showcasing a collection of books reflecting the vibrancy of Hispanic culture. Mark your calendars because on Saturday, Coastal Carolina University is providing transportation to the Cape Fear Latinos Festival in Wilmington, North Carolina! This festival promises to be a feast for the senses, with live music, traditional dance, delicious food, and vibrant art. The departure from the Lib Jackson Student Union is set for 12:30 p.m., returning around 6:30 to 7 p.m. It’s a chance to immerse yourself in a lively celebration of Hispanic heritage.
Robeson Community College’s Celebration
Jumping right into the festivities, Robeson Community College is hosting a special event that blends celebration with practical resources for students. From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., attendees can look forward to an on-site admission decision, help with FAFSA, and even a taste of delicious Mexican cuisine catered by Melecio’s, a beloved local restaurant. With a taco bar, sweet Horchata, and traditional Tres Leches cake, it’s going to be a culinary treat for sure!
Dance and Fun
If you have a passion for dance, be sure not to miss the Viva la Danza workshop at CCU, scheduled for 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or just curious, professional instructors will guide participants through the exciting rhythms of Latin American dance styles. And speaking of fun, the LJSU Theater will showcase an exciting evening of La Lotería, featuring games, performances, and prizes from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. It’s going to be a night to remember!
Day of the Dead Festival
To wrap things up, don’t forget the upcoming 2nd Annual Day of the Dead Festival, hosted by the group “Latinos in Myrtle Beach,” taking place on Sunday in the Wicked Tuna parking lot in Murrells Inlet.
