Residents woke up to a stunning blanket of snow, marking the largest accumulation the area has seen in a whopping 25 years!
With a delightful 4.5 inches of snow gracing the ground, Myrtle Beach has tied for the fifth snowiest storm on record. However, it wasn’t just Myrtle Beach that experienced this surprise snowfall. Nearby locations on the Grand Strand saw varying amounts, with Carolina Forest, Loris, and Longs receiving up to six inches! Meanwhile, towns like Aynor, Conway, and Socastee weren’t far behind, reporting 5.5 inches. It’s clear that this winter storm really knows how to make an entrance!
As picturesque as it may be, the sudden snowfall brought along its fair share of complications. Local temperatures are expected to slowly creep towards a mild 40 degrees by Thursday, but icy and snow-covered roads have raised a red flag for anyone planning to travel. Conway Medical Center reported treating a total of 11 patients in their emergency room since Wednesday morning due to slips and falls related to the snow and ice. According to reports from North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue, most roads and bridges remain open, but there are definitely some slick and icy patches on main routes like Highway 17 and Ocean Boulevard. It’s crucial for drivers to stay alert and mindful of these tricky spots!
Efforts to clear the roads are in full swing, with public works crews tackling the snowy aftermath. Unfortunately, refreezing is a concern as temperatures are expected to dip once again at night. On a brighter note, Horry County government offices and Parks and Recreation facilities are set to reopen their doors at noon on Friday, January 24, 2025. However, all scheduled programs for that day have been canceled, so plan accordingly!
Myrtle Beach city officials are not falling behind either. They announced that their facilities will also be back in business starting at noon on the same Friday. In a positive move for local cleanliness, solid waste collections will be kicking off early Friday morning!
In Marion County, which is also affected by the winter weather, government offices are planning to reopen at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, letting the community get back to business.
Public transportation has certainly taken a hit, with Coast RTA suspending bus services on Thursday due to the hazardous road conditions. Similarly, PDRTA has halted its operations, adding to the travel woes in the area.
As for those wanting to fly in or out of Myrtle Beach, airport officials are working diligently to return to regular operations after runways were temporarily closed on Wednesday. By early Thursday, only a handful of flights were canceled, so there is some hope for air travelers.
