Amidst the azure waters of the Mediterranean Sea, in Naples, Italy, an extraordinary individual from Florence, South Carolina is making his mark. Petty Officer 2nd Class Brian McCallister serves at the Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples, taking on important responsibilities and demonstrating exemplary dedication.
A graduate of South Florence High School, McCallister embarked upon his Navy journey seven years ago. Like many young people in search of adventure and new horizons, he chose to join the Navy with a desire to see the world. Today, he has fulfilled this ambition by visiting 16 countries. However, it’s not just the travel that enthralls McCallister. He finds immense satisfaction in the very essence of Navy service – the positive impact it enables him to make.
McCallister brings his talents to the table and feeds the spirit of the Navy as a culinary specialist. According to McCallister, what he enjoys most about his job is its significant role in boosting morale. The delight of preparing meals for sailors and marines, knowing that it directly influences their spirits and productivity, is an incomparable feeling for him.
As a committed member of the unaccompanied housing staff, McCallister consistently leads with initiative and a ‘can-do’ attitude. His efforts have significantly contributed to the overall professional and personal development of the members, inspiring them to be proactive in giving back to the community. His contagiously positive attitude trickles down to everyone around him, making him an asset to the department.
NSA Naples, hosting an impressive 50 commands and about 8,500 personnel, serves as an operational on-shore base to ensure security and stability in Europe, Africa, and Southwest Asia. The dedicated servicemen and women, including McCallister, work tirelessly to ensure free passage of international trade via seaways, and to safeguard undersea fiber optic cables- the backbone of our digital world.
McCallister and his peers serve a nation that operates globally, ensuring national prosperity and security. This strong sense of duty and purpose resonates with McCallister’s understanding of service in the Navy. “Serving in the Navy means answering the call that protects the people I love,” he stated.
While serving, McCallister takes particular pride in the mentoring aspect of his role. He finds immense joy in seeing the sailors he has mentored receive recognition and earn promotions. This focus on building others up, guiding them, and humbly basking in their success is a testament to McCallister’s character and dedication to service.
It’s clear McCallister is fulfilling a critical role in the Navy, embodying the values he took from home. These include having a strong work ethic, embodying humility, and keeping faith at the forefront of his life. His story serves as a testament to the ripple effect of one individual’s dedication and service in the larger scheme of national defense and global security.
