On a lively Thursday afternoon, nearly 100 protesters gathered at Trump Tower in Manhattan, leading to the arrest of 98 individuals who were voicing their opposition to the detention of Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil. The demonstration was organized by the group Jewish Voice for Peace, marking a significant moment in the ongoing discourse around Palestinian rights and activism.
The heart of the protest centered on Khalil, a Palestinian activist who was recently detained by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) due to his participation in pro-Palestinian demonstrations at Columbia University. Protesters were particularly concerned about the implications of his arrest on the freedom to express political views without fear of governmental reprisal.
As the clock struck noon, demonstrators donned bright red shirts emblazoned with phrases like “Not in our Name” and “Jews Say Stop Arming Israel.” Holding banners that read messages such as “Never Again for Anyone” and “Come For One, Face Us All,” the crowd gathered with a spirited resolve. The chants of “Free Mahmoud Khalil” and “Free Palestine” echoed through the plaza, underscoring the urgency and emotion behind their cause.
As the NYPD moved in, they did so amidst a backdrop of solidarity, with demonstrators sitting in unison, chanting, “the whole world is watching.” In a creative twist, a woman organizing the protest took to a balcony overlooking the atrium of Trump Tower, livestreaming the event and amplifying their voices.
Interestingly, the protest unfolded on the same day as the Jewish holiday of Purim, which celebrates heroism and resistance against oppression. This timing only intensified the protesters’ message, most of whom viewed their actions as a contemporary form of standing against injustice.
Of the 98 arrests made, about 50 individuals were led away in zip ties, facing charges of trespassing, obstructing governmental administration, and resisting arrest. Thankfully, the protest remained peaceful with no injuries or damage reported, highlighting the non-violent intentions of those involved.
Khalil, who is currently being held in an ICE facility in Louisiana, is a Palestinian refugee raised in Syria and was attending graduate school at Columbia University when he was arrested at his New York home after the Trump administration revoked his green card. This move, denounced by many as a politically motivated attack on a student activist, reflects the broader tensions regarding the treatment of foreign students and advocacy surrounding Palestinian rights.
In response to his detention, Khalil’s legal team has filed an amended habeas corpus petition naming Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as respondents, aiming to challenge the legality of his detention. Meanwhile, the Council on American-Islamic Relations is actively pursuing a federal lawsuit aimed at Columbia University and Barnard College over alleged violations of student privacy concerning the events surrounding Khalil’s activism.
This protest forms part of a larger movement against what advocates are calling the criminalization of Palestinian rights advocacy in the U.S. Critics believe that Khalil’s arrest is a troubling sign of how dissent against U.S. policy regarding Israel is treated. Some supporters have pointed out that the conflation of criticism against Israeli policies with accusations of terrorism only serves to silence necessary discourse.
Among the crowd was actress Debra Winger, who stepped up to voice her opposition to Khalil’s detention, taking aim at the broader implications of the Trump administration’s policies, which many have perceived as increasingly hostile toward activism.
